George Gershwin is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. His works include classical compositions, musicals and soundtracks which often employ elements of jazz. Many of his melodies have became jazz classics. In this enjoyable GERSWHINPORTRAIT Luigi di Ghisallo assembled three of Gershwin's most popular melodies: "Rhapsody in Blue", his best-known classical work, "Summertime", a famous song from the opera "Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" from the soundtrack of "ADamsel in Distress".

"S'vivon" is a popular Hanukah song. The word means "dreidel" (a spinning top) and this celebratory song reminds us of the traditions of the holiday. Forest of Tranquility is our newest work in our very beginning band series. Like all of our compositions in this performance level, your students can play this within the first few months of study. Thus, getting in a very early concert and keeps kids in the band program. This is a gentle sounding song starting in a minor mode, moving to its relative major and back to minor, a sound not often heard for a beginning band at this level. Clarinets do not cross the break. One can easily imagine in the days of Castes and Kings, how this composition may spark the feeling of what it may have been like for Knights of the Kingdoms to not only protect the Lords of the Castle, but also be chivalrous to the Ladies of the Court. Dancing at the feasts and festivals, escorting the royalty to various events. Knights had much more to do than fight. They were allowed to have fun. Sometimes. Like all of our Grade compositions, its main purpose besides giving good and interesting music for young musicians to play, is that it is an opportunity for the band director to teach some aspect of music. This is a great composition for introducing eighth notes and following dynamics. No clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is A (in the staff). Everyone plays rhythmically together. Only the drum part may vary. All chords of the diatonic scale are used to make the harmony more interesting with no accidentals.

Ever Forward, Ever Onward is a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up. The lines are interesting, too, no matter what instrument you can play. Students will love to play this and I hope you have fun. 1st trumpet's highest note is A.

Dancing Trolls [Norwegian Dance] - Øystein Olsen Vadsten
"Dancing Trolls" is a sequel to "The Battle of the Hats", which was published in 2015. Like "The Battle of the Hats", "Dancing Trolls" is a piece of music based on Norwegian traditional dances. This time around,its the reinlender dance which takescentre stage.The music is composed by ystein Olsen Vadsten who keeps the strong melodic and tempo, which is dear to this kind of dance. Admittedly given a make-over with a more rhythmic accompaniment and more excitingharmonization.This makes it a fun piece, both to Listen to and play. The reinlender dance derives from the Rhineland in Germany,and is also known as the German Polka.To the conductor:Because this is a dance form whichisdependent on the right "swing", it is of great importance to keep as close to the metronome mark as possible. A steady groove, primarily specified by the drum set, is also essential for a good result. Remember to keep a good balance between themelody carrying instruments and the accompaniment. Good luck and have fun with this "crazy" little tune.

The march is based on the motto "Commitment to Victory". The main theme is loosely built around a Norwegian dance; halling from Senja. It has a "kvnsk" origin (Finnish-Hungarian spark), but the source is probably even more far east.In themarch, the halling is affected by other melodies which play counter-voices, but despite the attempt to force the melody in another direction, it triumphs victorious. The music is the North Brigade's "Will to Win".

Hellbillies is a Norwegian rock band founded in 1990 in the small village of ...l, Hallingdal. They are now among the most popular bands in Norway with 16 CD-releases. They are awarded the Norwegian "Spellemannsprisen" (an equivalent to Grammy) several times. "Svnlaus" ("Sleepless") is the title track from their last record album released in 2016. It's a typical powerful rock song and should be played with power and precision.
