Beginning with a brilliant fast section, this is followed by a more serene, introspective section with lyrical lines and soloistic playing in the oboe, horns, and trumpet. Wh then return to the festive tempo for a rousing finale.

After this, the tempo slows as the mood changes to a more dignified and stately version of the opening motif played in a legato style. This section progresses to a return of the fanfare that brings the piece to a triumphant conclusion. There is also a cut which allows for effective performance in a shortened version.

One of the most intriguing mysteries of all times surrounds this fabled body of water in a land rich in legend and lore. Imagine being on the shores of Loch Ness, part of a large group of peasants having a party, dancing while accompanied by the tuneful sounds of bagpipes and flutes. At the height of the revelries, the huge, shadowy shape of the Loch Ness monster rises out of the water, causing everyone to flee in a panic. After gathering at another location, still on the shore of the loch, the dance begins again. Another chapter added to the legend as everyone wonders: will they be left in peace or will the monster return?

The theme of this composition is immediately evident from the title, which almost requires no further explanation. It will never be possible to represent or reproduce the full implications of a tragedy such as war, all too often forgotten, concealed, exploited or written off as being an evil that is "necessary" for the development of civilisation. War changes the course of human history: man kills man, fathers bury their sons, children take up arms, and mankind is devastated by evil, choosing death over life. The atrocities, repeatedly perpetrated and evident to all observers, are an offence to human dignity. Yet they are tolerated and, at times, even re-interpreted as inevitable remedies for "obstacles" to the global economy, in order- it would seem- to build "a better world". And all this goes on despite the fact that the terrible scars left by past wars are still evident and should serve as a warning to ensure that such tragedies do not return to devastate our world. "No War" is thus a heart-felt protest against any form of culture that justifies war as a means of gaining wealth and power, satisfying the economic needs of the richest countries at the expense of the poorest nations. In so doing the one truly fundamental value is annihilated, that of human life.

Ascendance - Robert Thurston
A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. The Seven Summits are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. Using the concept of the summits, this piece explores the rush of adrenaline, the pounding of the heart, and the sheer joy of being one with nature. The middle slower section represents the pitfalls and difficulties of climbing the mountains, demonstrated by the several accidentals and mature chordal progressions. Finally, the end brings the climber's triumphant return to base camp! 1st trumpet's highest note is G.
