Its luxuriant, reticent opening moves into beautiful lyrical lines and all-encompassing harmonies before leading into the journey at sea, punctuated with a cool 6/8 groove. To finish, we have a climactic return of the original lyrical material. This is a large-scale work of dramatic proportions.

Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. The fast second section begins with some wonderful quiet percussion writing and the phrase and meter shifting versions of the original tune cleverly vary it before leading to the fully-scored return of the melody in its original form. Flaming Arrow is written for beginning band, and uses only the first six notes learned in most beginning band methods: Bb to G. The piece is cast in C minor; consequently, an alternate trombone part is provided that does not reach out to sixth position. Beginning with mysterious opening material that is used later in the work, the piece then moves to an aggressive up-tempo section with lots of percussion. This is followed by a return of the slow opening material and a gradual accelerando with the sound of tom-toms. The piece ends with a short coda for an energetic conclusion.

The title of this piece reflects its upbeat, forward-driven character. It starts out with a soul groove, carrying a prominent theme which invites players and listeners to dance. The slower middle section features a blues with optional solo parts. After the return of the soul beat, the piece concludes with a striking reaffirmation of the initial theme. On a Roll may be performed as an effective opener or as an upbeat rhythm item during a concert or contest. On a Roll was commissioned by the Zrcher Blasmusikverband for the Zrcher Kantonalmusikfest 2024 in Urdorf/Schlieren, Switzerland.

Long Road has the simple sincerity of a hymn yet is is both beautiful and lush. At the midway point a gentle susurration of bell-sounds, descant recorders and tin whistles appear over sustained brass. There is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key before the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close. Phillip Littlemore has here created a vivid new version for concert band. Band Grade: 4

£106.99Desert Dances - Philip Sparke
Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction, mostly in 3/4, which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece, a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows, which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest with nice featuresthroughout all groups of the band.

£99.99Salutation - Philip Sparke
Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

This work for advanced band was commissioned by the Tennessee Valley Winds to celebrate the group's 30th anniversary. The piece begins quietly with clarinet solo, then quickly moves to a celebratory section in 12/8 meter. The mainmelody is stated in many different voices as it steadily builds to a moment of controlled frenzy. A brief lyrical section features an expressive style and also a moment of glory for the entire woodwind choir. The work concludeswith a return to the vibrant and enthusiastic flavor of the opening. Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening Allegro, but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return tothe opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. A great concert opener that will show off the talents of your musicians!

Walkabout - A Kaleidoscopic Journey for Band - John Brakstad
The concept of Walkabout comes originally from the Australian aborigines. A Walkabout is a journey where the goal is of less importance (even though you always end up where you started). It is the journey itself, and what you experience on the way,that is important. That could mean different moods, challenges, experiences in nature, various kinds of people, humour, joy, drama etc. The composition Walkabout consists of a several miniatures and episodes which are woven together. Someof the working titles for the miniatures have been: Call of the Unknown, Walk, Nightfall, At the Lake, Panorama, The Happy Man and The Sad Man, The Clown, The Valiant, Struggle and Relief,and Return to Home. The recurrent theme, which isheard at the beginning of the piece, symbolises the journey and the call of the unknown. Kaleidoscopic means Changing colours and patterns.
