Goldene Kameraden - James Barnes
"Goldene Kameraden" was commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Musikverlag RUNDEL. The title of the piece is a combination of the golden anniversary of the company and all my friends who work there - but it is also a humorous pun on one of my favorite German marches: "Alte Kameraden". Although marches are rather out of favor in the U.S. these days - unless they are by John Philip Sousa - I love to write them. And so I was happy to have the opportunity to compose this for Thomas Rundel, his family and the team at Musikverlag RUNDEL. The strict form of marches and the necessary march-like clichs required may seem restricting to other composers, but I perceive this as a musical challenge. It is like completing a crossword puzzle: one must go by all the traditional rules" but still produce something creative.

"Fanfares and Fantasies" was commissioned by Strindheim Janitsjar for their 40th Anniversary in 2019. The commission was supported by The Composers' Remuneration Fund.With the title "Fanfares and Fantasies", I try to accommodate both the extroverted (represented by fanfares and celebration), with the quiet and introverted in the small interludes I call fantasies.The solitary flute in the fantasies symbolizes something that is very far from brass fanfares, but still, I believe that by this, both the band and the music emerge with even greater depth. And by this span, the music's ability to accommodate all nuances emerges.- Stig Nordhagen

Rendezvous was commissioned by Krohnengen Brass Band for their 50th Anniversary in 2019. This version for Concert Band was scored autumn 2020.Rendezvous is devided into three sections. Each section are referring to Edvard Grieg's own titles. but twisted, to make sure that everybody understand that this music is a mash-up of themes Edvard Grieg used in opus 54 (for piano) and opus 61 (songs for children).1. Trolltog med avsporing (March of the Trolls derailment)March of the Trolls is a famous part of Edvard Grieg lyric pieces, opus 54.2. Klokkeklang i feil sang (Bell ringing in wrong tune).Bell ringing show that Grieg was one of the first composers to write the way impressionists did. What happens if this beatiful piece is combined with several other themes from the same book? It somehow works in its own way.3. Pep talk til Blakken (Pep talk to Blakken)The riff used in the first part becomes an important part of the third part: a funky treat of the childrens song "Kveldssang for Blakken" (Evening song for Blakken).I felt that a rather tired old horse needed a pep talk more than a slow tune. So that is why you get this music(!) - and this is how my rendezvous with Grieg ends.Not sure what maestro Grieg would have thougt... But, I have read that the fiddlers that played the tunes Grieg used was not happy with the way Grieg used them.So there you go...Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

A good friend of mine, trombonist and professor Jesper Juul Windahl commissioned me a trombone quartet. I then wrote Four Nordic Folk Pops. The last of the four is a Norwegian tune called Havard Hedde in a funky version. Then I made a brass quintet version for Lofoten Brass Quintet for a their Australia tour. The trombonist in the quintet asked me for a brass band version to be used in an entertainment contest (SIDDIS Brass). Havard Hedde did not succeed in getting married, but I think this version wil make him dance again. Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

I have always had a love for both classical and folk music.It is in between these expressions I thrive while composing.This piece contains both fast and lingering alternations between these expressions, complementing each other and creating a whole. This whole creates something larger than just the two individual constituents, a new entity. The Odyssee tells the story of Odysseus, the undaunted hero. In times long ago the blind poet Homer wrote this famous epic. The "Odyssey" follows the "Iliad", the story of the bloody war between the Greek and the Trojans. This battle endsafter ten years thanks to the Odysseys famous trick. the Trojan Horse. The Odyssey is not a war epic, but a story about perseverance, loyalty, adventure, and the survival instinct of its ingenious hero. In The Odyssey, Homer describes howOdysseus, the king of Ithaca, had to endure another ten years of affliction after the ten years of war in Troy before he could finally return to his home land. During those years, his wife, Penelope, had to try and keep her many admirers away.These men not only wanted het hand but also the kingship. To prove her husbands worth, she played a trick: "As soon as I have finished weaving this shroud for my father-in-law, Laertes, I will choose one of you to become my husband", she promisedthem. But during the night, she secretly loosened what she had woven during the day, prolonging the time until Odysseus would finally return. After twenty long years, when he finally stood at the door, she wondered: Is this really my husband? Ishe an imposter? Cunningly, she asked him to move the bed, because only she and her husband know that the bed was immovable and was build around an old three trunk! Odysseus was deeply moved: this really was his wife, his Penelope! Nearly threethousands years later, the loyalty and strength of this character, and all the dangerous adventures that Odysseus survived thanks to courage and intelligence, still moves us today. Odyssee by Jan Bosveld is not just an adventure story, butrather a characteristic piece in which memories of Homers story can be heard. The composition opens with a firm, stirring theme describing our hero, Odysseus, in detail: This man is not to be taken lightly. The further development of thisshort introduction completes this character sketch: trustworthy, perseverant, and a genius. After that we can picture Odysseus on the lonely beach of Ogygia. Do the trumpets depict his memories of the war of Troy? Does he think of his wife, as werecognise the weaving loom of Penelope in the murmuring eighth? In the solemn, plaintive part that follows, we can imagine Penelope feeling lonely, sitting in the womens room with her servants.One of the girls plays the harp, but that does notclear the sombre atmosphere. Then we can imagine seeing the sorceress Circe, who changed Odysseus men into swine. After she gives a simple magic sign something follows that reminds us of the sound of pigs grunting. Then the Odysseus theme resounds:the hero comes to savi his comrades. Assisted by Hermes, he forces Circe to lift the spell. The piece ends the same way as it began, with an animated theme: Odysseus is still the same, undefeated and not to be taken lighty!

£214.80Missa Solemnis - Serge Lancen
This Mass has been dedicated to His Holyness Pope John Paul II, to witness Lancens deep and respectful admiration for the Holy Father. The work was composed in 1986 and written for two solo voices: a soprano and a baryton-Martin (high baritone), mixed choir, harp (ad libitum) and symphonic band or organ. It has ten parts: INTROIT - KYRIE - GLORIA - OFFERTORIUM - SANCTUS - PATER NOSTER - AGNUS DEI - COMMUNIO - DEO GRATIAS - and as final part an ALLELUIA. Lancen expressed his views about this Mass as follows: 'The most important aspect of the Mass is the praising of God and the sacrificing to God; that is why I thought it suitable to use both the themes of the Sanctus and the Offertorium in writing the Introtus. It seemed to me also quite logical that the initial themes of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei would be rather similar as these are two moments where the priest and the worshippers invoke God. The composition ends with a brilliant Alleluia in which I also briefly quote the theme of the Sanctus.' This Mass was premiered on 27 may 1989 at 'Our Lady's Church' in Maastricht, The Netherlands, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Roman Catholic Band Federation of the Limburg County. The Bishop Castermans celebrated the Mass, whereas Jan Cober conducted this first performance. The Missa Solemnis is an alternation of meditating, though often impressive, orchestral passages with angelical choral sounds and the pious singing of both soloists. This may not be the type of music we usually expect from Serge Lancen, but nevertheless the composer remains faithful to his own typical style of composition. You can call this work romantic, though it surely is 'contemporary' or, why not, 'from all times'. The instrumentation is varied and extremely rich, mostly due to Lancen's typical use of 'wind band colours'. This Latin Mass suits perfectly well in the tradition of Roman-Catholic Masses that have been written by several great composers.

1. La belle Franoise.This song tells the story of the beautiful Franoise, who is visited by her lover on the eve of his departure. She helps him prepare for his voyage and they talk for the last time at the foot of a rock, which has been their trysting place. The next day, when he has left the harbour, he hears the sound of a bell. It is the bell that tolls for Franoise, who is being carried to her grave.2. Le Prince Eugne.At least two versions of this song are in existence, both of which are represented here. It tells of the prince Eugne, who, on his way to Paris, encounters twenty of his worst enemies. He manages to kill fourteen of them before his sword breaks. He then asks his page to get him another sword, but the lad is too afraid for his own life. This being the case the prince tells him to tell his wife to take care of his son, who 'will have his revenge by lighting a candle in Paris'.3. Pinson et Cendrouille.This song deals with the marriage of two not further specified animals, who have nothing with which to prepare a wedding feast, and need help from the other animals. But when the rat comes in carrying a fiddle, he is chased away.4. Le Dpart de l'Amant.At least two versions of this song are known, both of which are represented here. It is one of many songs dealing with departure, and is of Canadian origin. The lover is warned of the charms of the pretty 'canadiennes' which among Acadiens refers to French Canadians from Qubec. 'Be true to me save your heart. When I return from my voyage I will make you happy'.5. Le Remde son Talon.This, like many children's/folk songs is a bit of a nonsense song. Marguerite has trouble with the heel of her shoe, and asks her mother for help. Mom suggests various things, such as an onion (too round), a tomato (too flat) etc. In the end it turns out that a bachelor is her best bet.

£89.99Highlights from George and Ira Gershwin's - George Gershwin
Strike Up the Band is a 1927 Broadway musical by George and Ira Gershwin, based on a book by George S. Kaufman. Surprisingly, the show proved to be an early failure for the talented Gershwin brothers, closing while the out-of-town tryouts were still underway. Despite this setback, it was revised in 1930 with a somewhat similar plot by Morrie Ryskind, and the show enjoyed a respectable run of 191 performances. This arrangement by James Barnes includes four of the best tunes from Strike Up the Band: Mademoiselle in New Rochelle (composed for the 1930 revival), Soon (also composed in 1930), The Man I Love, and Strike Up the Band. Curiously, The Man I Love, which is now considered to be one of the most popular George and Ira Gershwin standards, was NOT included in the 1930 run of the show.

When I tried to capture the essence of riding a grand tour, I thought of three important things: Strength, Courage and Perseverance. And this applies not only to sport, but to all major challenges in life. Everything starts - and ends - with this. All this formed the basis for the dual title of this work: It All Starts Here - Strength, Courage, Perceverance
