The Pageant of London - Frank Bridge
Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge's best known organ piece and including the chimes of Big Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable and, in the words of wind band 'legend' Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative to Holst's two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and also by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music.

The Gilded Theatre - Kenneth Hesketh
The Gilded Theatre was commissioned by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. They gave the first performance on 10th August 2008, at St. John's Smith Square, London conducted by James Gourlay.The Gilded Theatre can, in some ways, be seen as a continuation of dramatic forms as presented in a previous piece by Hesketh, Diaghilev Dances. Unlike the Dances, however the music in The Gilded Theatre is conceived as one continuous span and stretches of music are also subtitled and refer to stock characters or scenarios redolent of the commedia dell'arte or 17th Century French Theatre.The subtitles are Rideau, Les Idiots Ou Les Amants, Le Combat Commence, Desespoir, L'apparition, Folie, La Mort, Rideau. The music narative progresses through dramatic, comedic, romantic and aggressive moods supporting the idea of the abstract play to which the the above subtitles refer. Throughout the piece the composer has sought to challenge the players both technically and emotionally, and it is the players themselves who are in fact the protagonists in the piece.

The Spartan Warriors (CB) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich
The Sparta army is well-known in the time of the ancient Greek that the warriors would never lay down their weapons for any reason. The theme from the beginning of the piece strongly declares that the warriors are always willing to fight for their homeland. The slow movement reflects the feeling of the warriors when they are far away from their loved one due to their duty. The composers intently uses the harmony that gives a hopeful feeling but also painful at the same time. The audience can hear the bell during the piece. It is the symbol of the clock towers which located in every cities. Everytime that the warriors leaves a city, the sound of the bell becomes softer and softer until it disappears. Only at the end of the piece that the bell rings only one last time after the majestical theme. It's the bell of victory!

Anthem of the Mountain Yeti imagines the mysterious and wild spirit of the legendary creature. The piece features the signature yeti call in the trombone and horn sections, evoking the untamed wilderness and towering cliffs. Most of the notes are played in a staccato style, with a contrasting legato section in m. 21. The trombone and horn glissandi add to the chaotic, unpredictable nature of the yeti, with a sudden change to a calmer section before returning to the wild energy. The Bennett Band Books, published in four volumes starting in 1923, were used to teach literally millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century the march form and style. The pieces utilized in this book are: Activity, Summit, Success, Project, Courage, Mister Joe, Genius, Improvement, At Sight, Little Rastus, Laurel and Aline. These delightful marches, composed by famous march composer Henry Fillmore using the pseudonym Harold Bennett, have been given new life by arranger Larry Clark. The original essence of these marches is retained and only the instrumentation and some range issues have been altered to fit the needs of today's developing bands. This collection includes twelve of the Bennett marches along with a helpful march warm-up section composed by Larry Clark to help you teach the march form and style to young students. There is the added benefit of a full recording of each march performed by a professional band on the CD that is included in the conductor's score. This is a valuable collection for any level band to use for marches at contest/festival performance or for sight-reading purposes.

It was an interesting challenge to return to the form of a sinfonietta some twenty years after the last one. This work is not hugely problematic to play but was written without regard for technical demands, following a series of compositions that needed to take difficulty level into consideration. The work has five percussion parts but the tuned percussion, although desirable, can be omitted. As for the band parts, Oboe 2 is largely covered elsewhere but the colour of the cor anglais would be a definite enhancement to the overall sound. The work was written in 2025 when it seemed as if the world was a particularly volatile place.The first movement 'Foment' seeks to capture that menacing mood of unrest and the potential for violence that seemed to erupt without warning and without efforts to contain it from warmongers posing as peacemakers. The music is severe and focussed with just a short scherzo-like episode of levity to balance the quasi-military mood.'A Dream of Peace' takes a few moments to contemplate a different, more peaceful world and several ideas are considered before settling on the slow waltz-like melody. This uses a very tonal language but is given a particular hue by its use of sevenths and ninths and there are moments of stress which disrupt the tranquillity.In 'Call to Arms' the warlike mood returns with a sense of restless energy that drives the music to its conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 14.00
