£12.95Pioneers of the Medway (Concert Band - Score Only) - Phillips, Richard
The Salvation Army Band in my home town of Chatham, part of a conurbation of 5 towns in the South East of England known as the Medway Towns, celebrated their 135th anniversary in 2016 and this piece was composed as part of those celebrations. I suppose to some degree all composers and lyricists are pioneers, always striving to write something different and new. Well, there has been a number of 'creatives' who at one time or another have been members of the Chatham Corps and this piece includes songs from some of those. The opening motif is based on the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale and after a short 'fanfare-like' introduction the tune of Blacklands (Ray Steadman-Allen) is heard in 4/4 time. This is followed by a song from Ray Jones, a former Bandmaster of the Corps entitled 'On resurrection day', a song for children's voices published in 1971 and for mixed voices in 2009. Rosemary Steadman-Allen's 'To know and do thy will' is at the heart of the link into 'Everywhere', a new setting of John Gowans' words by Andrew Maycock (both former members) which is proving to be very popular at the moment. Finally, an arrangement of this composer's setting of 'Praise the Lord' is used to bring this piece to its conclusion. It was first performed on October 1st 2016 by the Chatham band under the leadership of Bandmaster Ray Maycock.

£99.95The Music for the Royal Fireworks (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Handel, George Frideric - Wiffin, Rob
This complete arrangement of The Music for the Royal Fireworks was made in January 2017 at the request of Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Roberts, Senior Director of Music of the Household Division. I tried to make the version as close to the original as possible while arranging it to work for modern symphonic band. Although tempting, I did not want to ?€arrange?€ it too much, certainly not as much as the familiar Hamilton Harty arrangements. Consequently I kept the whole work in the same key of B flat, either major or minor, and made a few logical adjustments for the lower key and the technical facility of modern instruments. I have added a few apposite dynamics and articulations. I have also notated the music in the appropriate ?€French?€ style, writing out the double-dotted figures, especially in the Overture. In doing this I have gone further than the limited suggestions in the Eulenburg edition and taken account of the expertise of exponents of ?€Historically Informed Performance?€. The instrumentation is for full band but would work without trombones and saxophones and, to a lesser extent, flutes; clarinets though, are essential.Duration: c. 20

Commissioned by the Military Wives Choirs to commemorate the centenary of 1918, the end of the First World War. The Vocal score is available separately - NOV167387-01To mark the centenary of the end of World War I, the Military Wives Choirs - 69 choirs from across Britain and abroad - commissioned Owain to write a piece for their album, 'Remember'. The text for Owain's work, 'The Poppy Red', is inspired by the 1918 poem 'We Shall Keep The Faith' by Moina Michael, itself inspired by John McCrae's 'In Flanders Fields'. The recording brought together 1105 voices with The Band of the Household Cavalry, conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton.

The White Stone was commissioned by the band of the catholic parish of Dossenheim on the occasion of the 1250th anniversary of the town of Dossenheim near Heidelberg, Germany. The work is named after a high peak (White Stone) in the east of the town. Throughout the piece the composer uses the tune How lovely you are, my Dossenheim in different forms and shapes, and musically he depicts the history and landscapes of this idyllic town. This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skilful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.Duration: 3:35

This work was composed by John Rutter to mark the colourful commemoration of the landmark event in the history of justice and freedom, the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta on June 15, 2015. The prevailing mood of the piece is festive, but a prayerful moment before the closing pages is Orlando Gibbons lovely hymn-tune 'Song 1', to new words expressing the theme of the occasion. In this arrangement, there is the flexibility of performing it with combined band and chorus, or by band alone, and with the added option of having the band sing the Gibbons hymn-tune.

An outgrowth of NBC's 1952 successful tele-documentary Victory at Sea, was Project 20 two years later: a 30-episode series that was scored completely by Robert Russell Bennett. The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its own momentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel's La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.
