Programme notes from the composer, Arthur J Michaels:"Procession of the Regal Scepter," (Grade II level), captures the regal splendor and majestic grandeur of processions, inaugurations, coronations and other stately ceremonies past and present, here and abroad.The piece begins with dignified legato phrases. A middle section features the brass instruments in a more punched, staccato style, followed by the woodwinds' antiphonal response. The piece then restates both the legato phrases of the beginning and the antiphonal staccato portions, and the piece ends in a stirring finish."Procession of the Regal Scepter" is within reach of less experienced bands yet suitable for more experienced groups. Ample doubling and cues let bands with limited or uneven perform the piece successfully. The piece's plentiful cuing allows for great performance flexibility. For this reason, "Procession of the Regal Scepter" works well in any concert program.

The Declaration of Arbroath - Andrew Duncan
Programme notes from the composer, Andrew Duncan:Originally written for The West Lothian Schools' Annual Concert 2006 and scored for Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Children's Choir and Narrator. This version has been rescored for Concert Band with optional parts for Highland Bagpipes and Narrator. The piece celebrates the internationally renowned Declaration of Arbroath. The music begins in the uncertain times of Scotland's early 14th century, following the Battle of Banockburn and the death of William Wallace. The narrator describes this scene and explains the origins of the Declaration. The music builds to a climax, but once again gives way to uncertainty, allowing the narrator to explain further the history surrounding the Declaration. A group of Scottish Nobles wrote the Declaration which was an appeal to the Pope to recognize Scotland's independence. The piece then reflects a positive outcome following the Pope's support of the Declaration. Further information is provided by the narrator which draws to a rousing build to express the emotive inspiration behind this composition.The original scoring (to include Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Choir and Narrator) is also available by request.

For Whom the Bells Tolls was commissioned by the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, who gave the premiere in their 10th anniversary concert, held in the Artane School of Music, Dublin, on the 31st August 2024.The commission was funded by money raised to provide a piece which commemorated friends and members of the orchestra who had recently passed away. This prompted the choice of title, taken from the famous poem by English writer John Donne (1572 - 1631), which reminds us that the death of anyone affects us all.The work opens with an enigmatic duet between oboe and clarinet. This is taken up by the full band and leads to the work's main theme, a lyrical chorale, which builds to a passionate climax. A central section, introduced by the English horn (cue clarinet), eventually leads back to a triumphal return of the chorale on full band. The mood subsides to introduce an echo of the opening material, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

The Castle on the Hill was commissioned by the Harmonie l'Abeille de Lucens, based in western Switzerland, and premiered by them in their 2025 Spring Concert on April 12th in the Grande Salle in Lucens. The band has a proud history dating back to 1883 and boasts a separate youth band as well as a music school. The march is in traditional form. After a brief introduction the main theme unfolds on the full band. This is followed by a bold theme in the bass, decorated with woodwind flourishes. A bridge passage leads to a second theme on clarinets and saxophones, repeated by the full band. A change of key heralds the trio section featuring a legato melody, again on clarinets and saxophones and taken up in a fresh key by the full band. This leads directly back to a recall of the opening material in a slightly abridged and decorated version, leading to an emphatic close.

A Miner's TaleThis work is dedicated to the miners, who often had to perform their duties under the most difficult conditions, frequently risking their lives. Many lost their lives in accidents throughout history, and many families lost their fathers. A Miner's Tale describes the beginning of a shift, marked by the signal on the wooden board. The foreman and the miners begin their arduous work underground. Suddenly, danger strikes, leading to a terrible collapse.Trapped beneath the rubble, the miners are overwhelmed by fear, despair, and loneliness. Only their camaraderie and the memory of their loved ones keep them going. In the darkest moment, in the dim light of their fading mining lamp, a vision of Saint Barbara - the patron saint of miners - appears before them. Shortly thereafter, they hear the sound of approaching rescue. This work describes the way the German river Saar holds the names of all the people who once lived in the area and of those who live there now. The introduction depicts the river flowing toward its confluence with the Mosel. The first names revealed by the river, in a dance, are those of the Romans, who established their first settlement here. Then the beautiful Saar Cathedral is portrayed, where believers give voice to the names of the people they know. Next, a powerful passage resounds: a reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit in Dillingen that has taken shape through the famous metal industry. Via a short clarinet solo, the work flows toward its conclusion in an emotional, stirring fashion, from nostalgic strains to full-blown euphoria.

This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)

The Quest of the Magi was one of the working titles for John Henry Hopkins Jr.'s famous carol, "We Three Kings." Written in 1857 for a Christmas pageant in New York City, "We Three Kings" tells the tale of the Magis' journey to find a newly born king in a faraway land and the precious gifts they brought with them. This piece focuses more on the journey of "following yonder star." Traveling across many countries in the first century was a perilous task, full of danger, thievery, and possible death, not to mention these men were traveling with some of the most precious and expensive cargo one could possess. This piece chronicles the magi acquiring myrrh, frankincense, and gold for their journey. Each treasure is represented by its own motif and woven into Hopkins' original carol. (2:45)
