The "big" composers from all over the world who are well known for their symphonic works, seldom wrote for wind orchestra. Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the rare and extemely valuable exceptions, with these unique variations on a theme of his fellow Russian countryman Michail Glinka. Rimsky-Korsakov, along with Balakirew, Borodin and Mussorgsky and Cui, were the founders of a sort of Russian kind of Romantic Nationalisitc music. Based in St. Petersburg they had conservatoriums in Austria, Germany, Italy and France.

£116.40Meistersinger von Nurnberg - Richard Wagner
In 1867 Richard Wagner completed his only comic opera 'Die Meistersnger von Nrnberg' (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) for which he himself had written the libretto, based on the 'Nuremberg Chronicles' from 1697 by Johann Christoph Wagenseil. The plot is partly historical, partly romantic and partly satirical. The prelude is based on some of the main themes of the opera; it starts with the impressive martial processional theme of the Mastersingers and also boasts a passionate love theme as well as the famous contest song which the hero, Walter, has to sing in order to win both the contest and his beloved Eva's hand. Willem Steijn wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band.

Shortly after the chartbuster 'The Godfather' had been released we published the main theme 'Speak softly love'. When we noticed that the music once again played a preponderant role in Francis Ford Coppola's movie picture 'Godfather II' we thought a fine selection of the main themes arranged for symphonic band was a must. Marcel Peeters made a thrilling selection starting, as the film does, with a mysterious flugelhorn solo leading to some minutes of suspense in the pure mafia tradition.

£186.20Highlights from Chess - Benny Andersson
The composers of the musical Chess, Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, as well as the lyricist Tim Rice had already had a very successful career before they started this huge project. Andersson and Ulvaeus had been the male singers of the popular Swedish group ABBA, whereas Tim Rice had written the lyrics for Lloyd Webber's musicals 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Evita'. The plot of the musical is situated in Merano, a small town in Northern Italy, hosting the Chess World Championships. The protagonists are the American titleholder and his Russian challenger, who are adversaries on both the sports and political level. Nowadays the subject is out of date, as Chess was conceived in 1984 when the political scene was completely different. This might be the reason why this musical did not hold out as long as e. g. 'Les Misrables' or 'Cats'. Anyhow the music remained very popular and songs such as 'Last Night in Bangkok', 'I know him so well' and 'Anthem' belong to the standard repertoire of 'musical classics'. In his 'Chess selection' Johan de Meij used the nice orchestral parts of the soundtrack which gave a kind of symphonic character to this musical.

Miss Saigon is a thrilling musical by the duo Boublil and Schnberg, that is also responsable for Les Miserables. It is a modern version of Madame Butterfly. The plot tells the sentimental story of a G.I. Chris who falls in love with a beautiful native girl Kim during the Vietnam War. When he realizes that she is pregnant he has to go back home in the States where his wife is waiting for him. In order to allow the father to educate the child, the young woman commits suicide. With his usual orchestration skill, Johan de Meij made a fine sympho-nic portrait, containing some of the most beautiful songs of the musical. Peter Laine has got a long and rich career with entertainment (and more serious) music. His experience, with a.o. the famous Swiss ensemble 'Hazy Osterwald Sextett' and several bands and radio orchestras in Switzerland, The Netherlands and Belgium, still fertilizes his original and extremely well orchestrated compositions for symphonic band. A nice example is this beautiful and expressive ballad which he dedicated to his charming wife Winy. A fine illustration of how woman's love is still the ideal muse nowadays

The American composer Milton Ager (Chicago 1893 - Los Angeles 1979) wrote several songs that became evergreens, such as 'Ain't she sweet' and 'Happy Days are here again'. The latter became extremely popular when is was chosen as official song for the presidential campaign of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. Since then it has been used by many a politician. Hastreiter made a fine arrangement for symphonic band of this pleasant tune that invites you to sing along.

The American soul music group Earth, Wind and Fire, set up in 1970 by singer and drummer Maurice Whitney, started a real international career from 1975 onwards. Especially the brass players were focused at the spectacular shows which brought a fusion of jazz and funk music. Manfred Schneider made a thrilling arrangement for symphonic band using the success songs Fantasy, I'll Write A Song For You and Boogie Wonderland.

The legendary comedian Charles Spencer Chaplin is the author of a series of immortal films in which music plays a rather important role. Chaplin, who played the violin and the cello, wrote various musical themes himself, but was also assisted by several orchestrators, among others Alfred Newman, David Raskin and Arthur Johnson. Undoubtedly, 'Charlie' had some original musical ideas, but above all he remained a creator of melodies with simple but fascinating themes. Marcel Peeters brilliantly arranged a number of those tunes for symphonic band. You can hear successively: Limelight Theme - Morning Promenade - This is my Song - Titina - Mandolin Serenade - Green Lantern Rag - Falling Star - Napoli March - Ze Boulevardier. They will no doubt recall the most striking scenes from the masterpieces of this unforgettable artist.
