£189.99Manhattan Pictures - Jan Van der Roost
In this colourful composition, Jan van der Roost recreates the energetic and multi-racial city life in Manhattan, using four contrasting movements. The opening movement is rather short and rhytmical. In the second "Picture", a variety of musical entities accumulate into a coloured "sound curtain", on top of which the brass section presents a broad theme. In contrast to the two previous movements, the third movement is exremely quiet, featuring the first flute, clarinet an oboe in broad melodies. Again, the orchestration plays an essential role. Following on a majestic "tutti" (almost "movie-like....) the serenity of the very beginning reappears. Finally, the nervousness anddynamic style of the two first movements come back in an exciting apotheosis with rich and sometimes surprising instrumentation which explores the multiple possibilities of the large symphonic wind band to the full.

Otto M. Schwarz composed Fire & Ice for a symphonic rock project commissioned by the national music schools of the Austrian cities of Imst and Pitztal. In these cities, winter tourism plays an important role in the economy with spectacular weekly displays by winter sportsmen and women. The performances of the freestyle acrobats take place in the evening and draw huge crowds. Using torches and other pyrotechnics, these acrobats entertain the audience by means of fire, lights, snow, ice and acrobatics. This piece makes a perfect opening or final work for any concert. This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time.

Max Steiner was born in Vienna in 1888, and grew up surrounded by music. He was a student of the Imperial Academy of Music, having among his teachers Gustav Mahler. In 1936 he signed an agreement with Warner. Steiner, considered the father of symphonic music in Hollywood style. One of his most famous and popular masterworks is, without any doubt, Gone with the Wind (1939). The movie was an immediate success and won ten Academy Awards. In spite of the years passed, this movie still moves young audiences around the world. Lorenzo Bocci has chosen the song Tara's Theme from this movie and turned the romantic music into an arrangement for concert band.

Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody.

The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.
