Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night - Elliot Del Borgo

The Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was the motivation for this musical composition. While not a programmatic depiction of the poem, the work attempts to recreate the essence of the poem in sound. Theopening motive, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. The use of sound layers - in the form of polytonal hymns - calls to mind the struggles and persistence of the human spirit and its refusal to go gentle.A substantial and dramatic work for mature ensembles. Dur: 11:15 (Grade 5)

The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by jazz drummer Maurice White, whose aim was to mix various music styles to produce a unique sound. Combined with excellent song writing and fine performances this sound made Earth, Wind & Fire one of the most influential soul groups of the seventies. In subsequent decades they experienced varying success but this medley reflects the heyday of this legendary group. In his job as staff arranger with the Royal Marine Band of the Dutch Navy, Peter Kleine Schaars wrote many top class arrangements. The talent of the musicians in the band made it possible to write in such a way that they closelyresembled the original works. Consequently this medley shines just like the original versions by Earth, Wind & Fire. Four famous songs have been used: 'In the Stone', 'Got to Get You into My Life', 'After the Love Has Gone' and 'September'.

Canterbury Chorale - Jan Van der Roost

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an "ad libitum" organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand.

    Eternal Harmony - Kevin Houben

In memory of Ralph Lenssen - dedicated to the Royal Wind Orchestra St. Philomena Chevremont on the occasion of its 125th anniversaryEternal Harmony is a restrained yet powerful tribute in which memory, connection, and musical tradition come together. The work was composed in memory of Ralph Lenssen and dedicated to the Royal Wind Orchestra St. Philomena Chevremont, which celebrates an impressive musical legacy with this anniversary. At the heart of the composition lies an intensely lyrical melody that runs like a guiding thread throughout the piece. This musical core is continuously illuminated, deepened, and transformed, giving rise to a rich and layered sound world.Throughout the work, an expressive journey unfolds, filled with subtle and enchanting turns. The wind orchestra is used in all its facets: from intimate, transparent passages to full, sustained soundscapes. This interplay creates a spectrum of contrasts in which musicality, balance, and tone color take center stage.Warm harmonies and organically flowing chord progressions contribute to an atmosphere of serenity and reflection. At the same time, the music builds toward moments of intensity and emotional depth, in which the orchestra reveals its full sonic richness.Eternal Harmony is thus more than a composition: it is a musical remembrance, a quiet dialogue between past and present, and a tribute to both a cherished individual and an orchestra that has embodied music and community for 125 years.

Sonoritas - Jan Van der Roost

Sonoritas was commissioned by the Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra, a professional wind orchestra from Taiwan. The work premiered on 10 September 2023 in the beautiful Kaohsiung Weiwuying Concert Hall, performed by the same orchestra and conducted by the composer. This impressive hall holds the largest concert organ in Asia, inspiring the composer to grant this majestic instrument a role in the composition - albeit ad libitum. Accordingly, all the important passages have also been provided for woodwind or brass instruments, so that the work can be performed with or without an organ. The title Sonoritas reflects the musical content, the rich timbres and sounds of both the wind orchestra and the organ being fully employed in this dynamic composition. A chorale melody with expansive chords opens the work and culminates in a driving theme presented by the brass instruments in various registers. The woodwinds, in turn, introduce a virtuoso saltarello-like theme, followed by a development of all these thematic elements in various forms and combinations. The work concludes grandly with an organ-like finale and, as a high point, a sonorous final chord, which crowns this wonderful sound piece with its broad lines and full harmonies, as well as rhythmic and technical fireworks.

Old Macdonald Had A Farm - Leroy Anderson

Leroy Anderson's setting of Old MacDonald Had a Farm has little in the way of documentation. It was written for and programmed by the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler, but it did not enjoy frequent hearings, so the setting was unknown outside of Boston. Conductors should feel free to feature animal sounds closer to home (for instance the sound of pigs in swine-rich Iowa or bison in Montana). To that end it is suggested that the members of the percussion section use their creativity to add humor and local color to this arrangement. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson_x001A_s enchanting work to new generations of audiences.
