The composer writes: 'The Phrygian mode is one of my favorite modes in music. In Fantasa Espaola you will hear a slightly altered form of the traditional mode, using a lowered second and raised third. It is the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale and can be heard in music from all over the world. Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions! We are delighted, at last, to make this work available ith wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. VirtEuphonity (CB) - Jan De Maeseneer
VirtEuphonity is a virtuoso and funky solo work for euphonium and band (or piano & drums). The work is written for Kevin Van Giel (euphonium at the Belgian Royal Air Force Band) and consists of three parts. The first is an atmospheric opener that taps the technical skills of the euphonium player with his many notes, double tones and jumps over the registers. The second part is a ballad and the third part you get a funky solo with Oriental influences to end again with the opening theme.

Red Lines (CB) - Stijn Aertgeerts
Red Lines was commissioned by the Swiss Army Brass Band and their conductor Philipp Werlen. The title is a reference to their very distinctive black uniforms with Red vertical lines. Switzerland is a country with a tremendously rich brass band culture and have some of the best bands in the world. The individual level of musicians is also of incredibly high quality. The work begins very bombastically with continuous 8th notes. This immediately sets the drive for the entire first movement where the low brass and woodwinds can also show off huge sounds several times. It culminates in a grand tutti before the music calms down in the second movement where the euphonium can show its solistic qualities and the band can show a big difference in dynamics and sound. The final movement is driven by the drums and timpani that provide a solid boost to keep moving the thematic material forward in the band and through the percussion solo a big build-up to a glorious finale.

Panic Button (CB) - Paul Saggers
Panic Button was commissioned by Bert Van Thienen especially for 2022 World Music Contest in Kerkrade (NL). The composer was given complete freedom musically, however, he was given two conditions. First, it had to be an atypical work, a composition that puts the orchestra in a different perspective than the traditional repertoire and be suitable for both concert and competition stages. Second, it had to give the musicians the opportunity to go completely wild for a while. On the one hand, to shake off any stress and, on the other, to give them energy for the rest of the program. Score & Parts. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's tuba concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section. The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea. The central climax of the movement triumphantly heralds the main theme from the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish. Duration: 18 mins. American Grade 4.5
