Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. The fast second section begins with some wonderful quiet percussion writing and the phrase and meter shifting versions of the original tune cleverly vary it before leading to the fully-scored return of the melody in its original form. The inspiration for this piece comes from one of Henry David Thoreau's most famous quotes - "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined." It was Thoreau's vision that we contemplate a simpler life and be deep thinkers about what we want our lives to be. The piece is divided into three distinct sections based on the same three-note motive. The first section is intense and bold, the second is introspective and lyrical and the third is dance-like, almost reminiscent of a Celtic folk song, in lilting in 6/8. After the exciting first section, a lyrical second theme departs to something beautiful and lush in harmonic structure. An Irish Legend contains original melodies in an Irish style, written to evoke the sounds of the emerald isle of Ireland. The piece is in traditional ABA form, beginning with a lilting Irish jig, then a more lyrical and slow second theme. After returning to the jig, it ends with a climactic section where both themes are played together. It sounds much more difficult than it plays. The piece is exciting and will be well within the capabilities of students at this grade level.

Der Aufstand - Gavin Higgins
Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh
Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood.The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!
