The second half of the 18th century, for the people of East Central Europe, was the time of the awakening of national consciousness. The leading force in the Hungarian enlightenment, the lesser nobility, also regarded as important the national character of the country's culture. A valuable kind of national music was the Hungarian dance music that flourished in the 18th century. The greater part of the repertoire naturally perpetuates the 'Hungarian-style' pieces from the previous centuries (appearing in foreign collections too described as hungaricus, ungaresca, saltus hungaricus or Ungarischer Tanz), but beside these we can encounter contemporary European dances and entertaining instrumental pieces in almost every style. The majority of the sources are collections compiled by non-professional musicians and intendedfor private music-making. In this work the composer uses melodies from the 18th-century Linus dance collection, in trioform, with harmonies and bass appropriate to that period. The musical fabric is rich in counterparts, the sound is mademore colourful with many kinds of percussion instruments. The register and rhythmic simplicity of the parts make thepieces easily playable even by music school pupils.

The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea, there is no wind, the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante), the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. De bemanning van het marineschip Admiral Spirit is druk bezig om het schip in optimale conditie de haven binnen te loodsen, de admiraal gaat namelijk het schip zelf inspecteren. In het eerste deel (Allegro con spirito) horen we een verklanking van het majestueuze schip en de zwoegende bemanning. Hoe beeldend zijn de emmertjes water welke overboord gaan (trombones). In het tweede deel (Andante) vaart het schip de haven binnen. Het schip is gepoetst en technisch is alles in orde. Derde deel (Allegro molto): De kapitein en zijn bemanning zijn nerveus (modulaties) en er wordt aan de finishing touch gewerkt. De Navy Band staat klaar om de admiraal te ontvangen! The second part brings us to the nearby church of St. Hippolytus-Olterterp while the final section describes the children playing in the woods of Sparjebird. Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean "Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!". The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim'. The composer himself says about the song, 'Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add 'blue notes' in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.'Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. 'Variations on Shalom Chaverim' ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: 'L'hitra'ot, Shalom' (See you again, and farewell!).

In the composition 'La terre' several aspects of Earth have been translated into sounds in an associative manner. The first part depicts Nature, Mother Earth, stability, the soil which is the source of life. Earth symbolizes tradition, rituals, fertility. In the music of the composition this can be heard in tonic and ostinato passages. Furthermore, human emotions such as gladness, sorrow, wonder, resignation, hope and despair, indissolubly connected as they are to mankind's life on earth, are musically reflected in sudden gusts of expression. Earth for us human beings is the solid ground on which everything in life takes place. In the second part different moodsare evoked in a sort of toccata. Now and then the music sounds fragmented, at other times as a solid whole. The robustness of the music in this part has its roots in the earth, originates from it. It reflects stability and strength, but love and nostalgia are also present in soft and fragile tones. 'La terre' is a musical narrative about Earth, in which music has been given ample room to show its many-sided beauty.
