Der Aufstand - Gavin Higgins
Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the celebratory fanfare.Wind Band Grade: 6 (Professional and elite student and 'national' bands)Duration: 10 minutes

Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh
Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood.The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!

Vranjanka - Kenneth Hesketh
Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

London Eye - Nigel Hess
'London Eye' is an incredibly large rotating wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a 'flight' on this riverside wheel, at the top of which the panoramic view of London is breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitable depiction of that view.This piece is the second movement of Nigel Hess' 'New London Pictures' which represents elements of London in the 21st Century.

The Catskills - Nigel Hess
In upstate New York lie the Catskills Mountains - an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen, they call you back again and again. The Catskills forms the second movement of East Coast Pictures, commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. This arrangement was made possible through Matt's instigation and generosity. Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions! We are delighted, at last, to make this work available ith wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. The New Corn Palace is a famous attraction in Mitchell, SD. Originally built to house the annual community harvest festival, the new ornate building opened in 1921 and became a premier venue for area symphonies and concert bands. Fort Dodge (IA) Band rang in the inaugural celebration, under the direction of Karl King, who composed this work for the occasion.In keeping with King's circus march tradition, a bold D minor introduction and first strain leads to a contrasting F major second strain, lyrical trio, and minor key break strain. This new edition condenses the five original trumpet parts into three parts, and re-scores the saxophones to meet modern standards, with additional percussion editing.
