Italienische Lustspiel Ouverture - Ted Huggens

This work was composed in the style of an Italian opera overture. The first part has a quick tempo and flashing dynamics, and contains some virtuoso passages. It has clearly been inspired by Rossini's music. The slow second movement is based on the popular Italian folksong 'Santa Lucia'. It looks like a serenade with trumpet and alto saxophone solos. The themes of the first movement come back in the fast final movement with a virtuoso part for the bass instruments. The composer adds now and then some motorial rhythm.

As Time Goes By - H. Hupveld

This song became very popular when it was used in the famous movie picture 'Casablanca', starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. You will undoubtedly remember the final scene when Bogart, with a most uncertain future ahead, is standing alone on the airport, after his sweetheart left him.

Dance of the Clowns - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

After the overwhelming success of his 'Second Symphony' Pjotr Tschaikowsky (Votkinsk 1840 - Saint-Petersburg 1893) got a request of the Imperial Theatre in Moscow early in 1873 to compose the stage music to the play 'Snegourotchka' (translated as 'The Snow Maiden', 'Snow White' or 'Snowflakes') which was to be written by Alexander Ostrovski, the greatest Russian playwright of that period. The wage of 350 rubles was particularly welcome to the young composer who completed the work in only three weeks time (between the middle of March and the 6th of April) before Ostrovsky finished his libretto. The first performance was given at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre on 23rd May, 1873 was very successful and since then the work remained on the Russian orchestral repertoire as a concert suite. The suite consists of 19 parts that incorporate twelve authentic Russian folksongs. The 'Dance of the Jesters' (sometimes called 'Dance of the Buffoons') is number 13 and appears in Act 3 as part of the carnival music; it suggests the joyful atmosphere of popular festivals.

For My Friend - Jef Penders

Jef Penders, often called 'The Spanish Limburger', lives since many years in the province of Valencia where he is strongly involved in the local musical life. He wrote this fine seguidilla Per al meu Amic (To my Friend) for his good friend Jess Alcntara. The seguidilla is a typical Spanish folkdance in a quick three-four time which was already popular back in the sixteenth century. It is in fact the melodic continuation of the bolero. Penders proves clearly that he understood and adopted the Spanish musical spirit.

    Hoagy Carmichael Selection - Carmichael

The American pianist and composer Howard Hoagland 'Hoagy' Carmichael was considered the creator of the so-called 'white man's blues' which he mainly used as part of the music he wrote for a series of films. However, these songs were made very popular by all kinds of singers and musicians later on. Peter Kleine Schaars arranged Carmichael's most famous tunes in this fine musical portrait of Hoagy Carmichael for wind band. You will certainly recognise successively Skylark, Georgia on my mind, Stardust and Up a lazy river.

The Highlights from Elisabeth - Michael Kunze

The life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) which started as a fairy tale but ended as a tragedy, inspired the librettist Michael Kunze and the composer Silvester Levay to write a musical based on the life of the popular 'Sissi'. The musical was premiered in Vienna on 3 September 1992 and was very successful for many years. The story is told by Luigi Lucheni, Elisabeth's murderer. So death, represented by a mysterious and seductive young man, is omnipresent throughout the musical. Several songs have become hits and, of course, you can hear them in this fine selection by Peter Kleine Schaars who gathered various music and dance styles such as the rock shuffle, the jazz waltz and the classical Viennese waltz.

Samba di Janeiro - Airto Moreira

The infernal and extremely rhythmical 'Samba di Janeiro' was a hit made popular by the group Bellini years ago. A driving and exotic sounding percussion introduction is followed by a most compelling theme that everybody recognises at once and that will make you jump up and dance. The rather quiet, mesmerising, middle part aims to let you catch your breath, but soon that cintoxicating rhythm returns and there you go again.
