£61.00Air - Edvard Grieg
The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg is still popular because of his theatre music for Ibsen's 'Peer Gynt' and his Piano Concerto opus 16. The suite 'Fra Holbergs Tid' (Holberg Suite) opus 40 was originally written for piano and then arranged for strings. Ludwig Holberg was a dramatist who got the nickname 'Molire of Northern Europe'. In this suite Grieg used several old dances (sarabande, gavotte, rigaudon) with completely new original harmonies. Willy Hautvast made this fine arrangement of the 'Air', a subtle andante religioso, extrac-ted from this suite.

£140.80Sarka Overture - Zdenek Fibich
This overture introducing Fibich's opera 'Sarka', was composed between 1896 and 1897 and is based on a famous Bohemian legend. Several Czech composers, such as Bedrich Smetana and Leos Janacek, have used this popular national story in opera's and symphonic poems. The relevant legend deals with Vlasta, the courageous Amazone Queen who has a quarrel with the Bohemian knights. After several battles she thinks of a cunning to conquer the knights. She leaves her ally, the beautiful Sarka, tied up to a tree in the middle of the forest. The knight Ctirad finds her, frees her and takes her back to his camp. In the evening he organizes a kind of victory celebration with his friends. At night, while the knights sleep it off, Sarka calls the Amazones. The latter have no difficulties to conquer the sleeping knights. Fibich does not keep strictly to the original legend and made quite some changes, especially at the end of the story.

£90.30Triana - Isaac Albéniz
TRIANAThe twelve part piano composition 'Iberia', published in four volumes between 1906 and 1909, is often considered as the absolute summit of all piano compositions by Albniz. Among those pieces 'Triana' is one of the most popular, not in the least thanks to the splendid orchestration by Fernndez Arbs, who also made famous orches-trations of 'Corpus Christi en Sevilla' (Feast Day in Sevilla), 'Evocacin' (Evocation) and 'El Puerto' (The Harbour).'Triana' evokes the famous suburb separated from the centre of Sevilla by the Guadalquivir river. It combines the rhythms of the 'sevillanas' and the 'rasguedo' (arpeggios) of the guitars with the charm of a melodic song. Juan V. Mas Quiles made this arrangement for symphonic band from the original piano score.

£61.00Trumpet Tune - W. Boyce
Originally the second movement of Boyce's Voluntary in D, this piece has become popular in the English Church as a postlude for occasions such as weddings. In this edition it has been extensively re-arranged by Rodney Parker in baroque style for two solo trumpets and band. The solo trumpets are best placed apart, ideally above and to each side of the band but not too far away. The piece should be played in a clear baroque style with special attention to dynamics and articulation. The accompaniments should never overpower the soloists and it should always be performed lightly. This is most important for the Tuba and other bass instruments for which this piece is a fitness test!

£61.00Fruhlingsrauschen - Christian Sinding
This excerpt from 'Six Piano Pieces' opus 32, is the only work of the Norwegian composer and pianist Christian Sinding (1856-1941) that remained popular, as well as a piano piece as in several arrangements of all kind. His operas, symphonies, concertos and chamber music, on the other hand, have all sank into oblivion. Sinding belongs with Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen to the generation of the late romantic Norvegian composers. His piece 'Frhlingsrauschen' (Rustle of Spring) suggests the birth of Spring and belongs to the better kind of the so-called 'salon music'.
