Hanover Festival (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned Hanover Festival to celebrate the band's 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section, characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band, the playful music returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns, this time accompanied by music from the vivo section, until a fast and furious coda closes the work.Duration: 8:20

Elves' Dance (from The Nutcracker) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich - Lavender, Paul

Here's the famous march from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker in a skillfully arranged version for young bands. The arrangement features a delicate opening by the percussion section and also carefully introduces two important rhythmic concepts to the band - the triplet, and the dotted 8th and 16th note pattern. Valuable and enjoyable music for developing groups.

Overture 1812 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich - Story, Michael

Most musicians dislike the term "watered-down," so we asked Michael Story to present this classic overture with musical integrity and honesty but to simplify the complicated orchestral writing to be playable by a very young band or ensemble. We think you will agree: This arrangement succeeds admirably! Duration: 2.00

Nocturne (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich - Van der Beek, Wil

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but lyric scenes. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise. After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can be considered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.Duration: 3:30
