Written in classic overture style with lots of syncopation and rhythmic intensity, "Celebrata" uses a four-note motive in both the fast and slow sections of this very playable, but exciting overture to provide unity and cohesion throughout. The driving percussion and unique harmonies make this piece a real winner for contest or concert performance. This is "real music" for young bands or more mature ensembles with limited instrumentation.

Masquerade was commissioned by Stadtmusik Willisau from Switzerland (Reto Gdel, conductor) to celebrate their 175th anniversary in 2003 and first performed by them in November that year.1. Overture: The first movement opens with a fanfare-like figure, featuring the brass, before the main them is introduced over staccato chords. After a short, syncopated interlude a legato theme is introduced in the tenor register and material is developed until the music slows temporarily. The opening theme returns and the 'tenor' tune is taken up by the whole band until the opening fanfare returns to close the movement.2. Elegy: The slow movement opens intensely with a bare two-part theme, which leads to a passionate chorale-style melody. A second theme is introduced and leads to a climax, a return of the chorale theme and a pianissimo repeat which again leads to a full-band climax. The two-part theme returns quietly to create a peaceful close.3 Interlude: A short movement which changes the mood to introduce...4 Finale: Three violent chords preface a lively syncopated opening theme. The trumpets introduce a second idea, which is treated fugally, and this in turn leads to the main melodic idea of the movement, over staccato chords. A contrasting subject is then introduced in the middle of the band, followed by echoes of the first movement fanfare. The opening theme returns and material is revisited until the opening fanfare returns in full to end the work triumphantly.Duration: 15:30

A scherzando bridge passage leads to the recapitulation.2. Serenade: Lento ExpressivoA short introduction leads to a sonorous theme from the middle of the band. A slightly more rhythmic central 5/8 section leads to a short cadenza-like duet for two alto saxes which reintroduces the opening of the movement.3. Finale: Molto VivaceA fast and furious finale which fails to settle long enough for a real theme to develop as motivic ideas are thrown from player to player. Eventually a violently syncopated tune emerges from the middle of the band but this is interrupted by a reflective interlude. This complete arrangement of The Music for the Royal Fireworks was made in January 2017 at the request of Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Roberts, Senior Director of Music of the Household Division. I tried to make the version as close to the original as possible while arranging it to work for modern symphonic band. Although tempting, I did not want to ?€arrange?€ it too much, certainly not as much as the familiar Hamilton Harty arrangements. Consequently I kept the whole work in the same key of B flat, either major or minor, and made a few logical adjustments for the lower key and the technical facility of modern instruments. I have added a few apposite dynamics and articulations. I have also notated the music in the appropriate ?€French?€ style, writing out the double-dotted figures, especially in the Overture. In doing this I have gone further than the limited suggestions in the Eulenburg edition and taken account of the expertise of exponents of ?€Historically Informed Performance?€. The instrumentation is for full band but would work without trombones and saxophones and, to a lesser extent, flutes; clarinets though, are essential.Duration: c. 20

Kennesaw Mountain Celebration
Commissioned by and dedicated to Kennesaw Mountain High School, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, this exciting concert overture will be a sure hit with your students. The intense opening moments immediately lead us to a brassy fanfare interlude. A secondary rhythmic dialogue between brass and woodwinds punctuates a flowing main theme. The slower middle section is a gracefully simple melody that offers a flowing contrast to the rhythmic intensity of the faster outer sections. Reminiscent of this composer's earlier composition "Fire Dance," "Kennesaw Mountain Celebration" is certain to be one of your student's favorites.

Shakespeare Pictures - Nigel Hess
While Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nigel Hess wrote music for over twenty productions. Hess has taken music from three works to form a 12-minute suite called Shakespeare Pictures. It begins with the boisterous overture to Much Ado About Nothing, followed by a contrasting slow movement depicting the beautiful statue from A Winter's Tale before displaying huge pomp of Caesar's Rome with The Entry to the Senate. This work is ideal for bands that have played and enjoyed Hess's work East Coast Pictures. This wind band suite was commissioned in 2008 by Birmingham Symphonic Winds. The original music is now expanded and re-orchestrated to form a new three-movement suite for symphonic wind orchestra.

A concert overture with interest and colour for the whole band, Hope Springs Eternal was written during the seemingly interminable lockdowns of 2020. The intention was to compose some positive music as an encouragement during difficult times. It starts with a strident statement before turning fairly shortly to a more reflective response from the woodwind. The opening returns and this time the response is broader before it builds to a peak and unleashes the faster music that follows. Several melodic fragments are introduced before a minor key theme is established. The music becomes lighter as it progresses until it reaches the cheerful and melodic trio section. The minor section makes a brief return before being forever banished by the final statement of the affirmative opening music.Duration: 6.45
