This portrait overture was written for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and was originally commissioned by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs and the Royal Air Force Central Band. It starts with Scramble, an alarm sounds for the pilots to scramble to their planes. The next short section This Was Their Finest Hour is nostalgic and lyrical in nature followed by Bandits at One O'clock, a short battle sequence. Soon the aerial skirmish subsides and is replaced by Victory and Flypast, which builds on the patriotic melody hear earlier, and brings the piece to a triumphant close. Three Sisters is a 1970 British drama film starring Alan Bates, Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, based on the 1900 play by Anton Chekhov. Olivier also directed, with co-director John Sichel; it was the final feature film directed by Olivier. The film was based on a 1967 theatre production that Olivier had directed at the Royal National Theatre. William Walton produced the film music using themes by Tchaikovsky, from the official national anthem of the Russian Empire in 1833 - 1917, God save the Tsar!, (the music of which is also included in several hymnals as 'God, the Omnipotent'), and which he featured in his 1812 Overture, to a charming imitation Swan Lake waltz. The original theme for Three Sisters has reappeared as contemporary stage plays and musicals, which are still active today. This short, descriptive arrangement offers an accessible opportunity for bands to experience tuneful music of the period.

This vivacious and tuneful overture was written for Rob Wiffin's friends in the Chiltern Concert Band. One of the tunes is actually based on the rhythm of the names of some of the stalwart members who were in the band when Rob Wiffin conducted it in the early 1990s and are still there now.In compositional terms this piece is in the light vein of Chase the Sun and High Spirits, featuring a fanfare opening that reappears towards the end, a slow middle section and a number of bright melodies, mostly built around the interval of a third.Duration: 7.20
