This portrait overture was written for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and was originally commissioned by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs and the Royal Air Force Central Band. It starts with Scramble, an alarm sounds for the pilots to scramble to their planes. The next short section This Was Their Finest Hour is nostalgic and lyrical in nature followed by Bandits at One O'clock, a short battle sequence. Soon the aerial skirmish subsides and is replaced by Victory and Flypast, which builds on the patriotic melody hear earlier, and brings the piece to a triumphant close. The Wand of Youth suites, subtitled Music to a Child's Play, were written in 1869 when Elgar was only twelve years old, music written for a play and acted by the Elgar children for a private family theatrical production. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, forty years later, he rearranged with only minor changes and orchestrated them as the two suites titled The Wand of Youth, Suite Nos. 1 and 2. Although The Wand of Youth suites date from Elgar's mature years, he insisted on calling it Opus 1, because he wrote these pieces originally for piano many years earlier. Suite No.1 includes seven movements: 1. Overture; 2. Serenade; 3. Minuet (Old Style); 4. Sun Dance; 5. Fairy Pipers; 6. Slumber Scene; and 7. Fairies and Giants.

William Alwyn (1905-1985) studied at the Royal Academy of Music where, at the age of 21, he was appointed Professor of Composition - a position he held for nearly thirty years. Apart from his vast output of serious music he contributed nearly 200 scores for the cinema. Starting, mainly with documentaries he wrote his first full feature-length score in 1941.The Crimson Pirate (1952) has music written in the form of an overture. As the title suggests the film was a swashbuckling adventure with romance thrown in for good measure. As always, Alwyn's music echoed the action on the screen!

This short overture, originally titled Sapper 300 was commissioned for the 300th Anniversary of the Corps of Royal Engineers in July 2016. It is formed from the Royal Engineers Regimental March Wings and the Corps song Hurrah for the CRE. Wings itself comprises two tunes - The Path across the Hills and Flugel! Flugel!. Hurrah for the CRE is sung to the traditional South African tune Daar le die ding. All the main melodic material is derived from one of these, although they are often spliced together in unusual ways and set in a manner progressing from dark to light. The work was first performed at the ?€Sapper 300?€ Concert at Rochester Castle, 17 July 2016.
