Commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and first performed by them on 6th August 1992.1. Overture: VivaceA bustling opening movement in sonata form. After an introduction in which a syncopated theme is tossed around the band, the first subject proper gives way to a more legato second theme. A scherzando bridge passage leads to the recapitulation.2. Serenade: Lento ExpressivoA short introduction leads to a sonorous theme from the middle of the band. A slightly more rhythmic central 5/8 section leads to a short cadenza-like duet for two alto saxes which reintroduces the opening of the movement.3. Finale: Molto VivaceA fast and furious finale which fails to settle long enough for a real theme to develop as motivic ideas are thrown from player to player. Eventually a violently syncopated tune emerges from the middle of the band but this is interrupted by a reflective interlude. Despite its Spanish title, the concert overture Fiesta is really Italian, recalling a festival that I saw several times as a child in the late 1960s while holidaying in a village at the southern tip of the bay of Naples. The date is August 15, the occasion the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated with colourful processions and ritual (some, one imagines, pre-Christian in origin), all rounded off with brass bands and home-made fireworks. - Matthew Curtis. Fiesta was originally written for the orchestra of St. Paul's School in London, It has had performances in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Royal Festival Hall where it opened a live broadcast concert in the BBC's International Festival of Light Music, and has made intermittent appearances on the radio ever since. This arrangement for Wind Band will make an excellent festival opener for accomplished bands and is a sure crowd pleaser with its dynamic flare and energy.

The Wand of Youth suites, subtitled Music to a Child's Play, were written in 1869 when Elgar was only twelve years old, music written for a play and acted by the Elgar children for a private family theatrical production. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, forty years later, he rearranged with only minor changes and orchestrated them as the two suites titled The Wand of Youth, Suite Nos. 1 and 2. Although The Wand of Youth suites date from Elgar's mature years, he insisted on calling it Opus 1, because he wrote these pieces originally for piano many years earlier. Suite No.1 includes seven movements: 1. Overture; 2. Serenade; 3. Minuet (Old Style); 4. Sun Dance; 5. Fairy Pipers; 6. Slumber Scene; and 7. Fairies and Giants.
