Eine Kleine Rockmusik - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

By the time the Mozart family tree had blossomed into the twentieth century, there was very little genius left in the bloodline. Unfortunately, though, at least one unscrupulous descendant, Wolfbane Amarillo Mozart, decided to capitalize on the family name by becoming a rock and roll composer. His only real talent seems to be plagarism, but your students and audiences will have a ball unraveling his zany conconction.

The Sun Will Rise Again - Philip Sparke

The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

Masked (Prerecorded Soundscape with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shapiro, Alex

Movement 3 from SuspendedMasked by Alex Shapiro is composed in the exact shape of a Classical Minuet and Trio waltz, though the music--a whimsical if somewhat demented masked ball (or, balls, in this case)--bears little connection to that of Mozart or Haydn. Historically, third movement Minuets gave way to the joke-like Scherzo, and the Trio section tips its hat to some welcome levity. This is one of four movements in Suspended, a piece is composed in the tradition of an 18th century Classical symphony: four contrasting movements which serve specific functions and reveal a story. The work begins in absolute rage and chaos, then alternates between moments of grief and bleakness. Grim reality shifts to a macabre, circus-like insanity, and by the end, flickers of genuine hope contrast a pervasive sense of dread, and finally arrive at more optimistic possibilities. To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the pre-recorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. Download information is provided in the printed piece.Duration: 5.00

Nepotism (Movement II from Symphony No.1, The Borgias) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

A sinister legend hangs over the Borgia family, a legend of corruption, abuse of power, orgies, sex and murder. These rumours proliferated especially during the papacy of Alexander VI, a descendant of the family, who was even called the Antichrist. On his death, contemporary witnesses reported that the devil himself prowled around the death chamber and a black dog run along the corridors of the Vatican as his emissary. One might say that this Borgia pope, who ruled together with his family with the greatest brutality, became demonised. Unscrupulousness, poison-toting, incest and other malice are to this day the hallmarks of this pontiffNepotism: Rodrigo Borgia was elected Pope on 11 August 1492. From the very start, the new pope was prepared to use any means to eliminate his opponents, either through the infamous Borgia poison or by excommunication and execution. His son Cesare, who wanted little to do with the church, was appointed cardinal against his will. Alessandro Farnese, broth of Giulia Farnese, the Pope's mistress, also became a cardinal. Numerous Spaniards were brought into the country and were appointed to ecclesiastical posts. This infuriated the opponents of Alexander VI. The Dominican Girolamo Savonarola from Florence demanded the removal of the Pope. He was tortured and banned. Giuliano della Rovere wanted to convene councils to depose the Pope, which Alexander managed to prevent through artful political manoeuvrings. Through great brutality, brilliant political skill and power games, this pope was able to achieve his goal of leaving for his children a great legacy. Alexander VI constantly changed his allies and always acted unscrupulously to improve his financial situation and expand his sphere of influence. At the centre of the second movement of this work is the medieval hymn Dies Irae (Day of Wrath), which acts as a warning in the background condemning the Pope's actions.Duration: 9.15

Romance (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original but was undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. Duration: 3.30

A Haunted Trilogy (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Jim H.

A Haunted Trilogy is guaranteed to become a favorite for student and audience alike. Set as a trilogy of three short movements, your band can play one for a quick novelty piece, or all three as a divertimento or program music. "March of the Gremlins" opens the suite with an eerie march. "Tarantella For Trolls" continues the spooky musical fun with a slightly twisted little dance. "Goblin's Gavotte" closes our haunted suite with an ominous romp. It's mischievously impish, looming, conniving, and a great learning piece for chromatics in three different styles. Boo! Snowdonia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Glyn, Gareth - Noble, Paul

From the composer's home on Anglesey, the magnificent mountain range of Eryri ('abode of the eagles'), known as Snowdonia in English, can be seen clearly, and it is this fine view that spurred him to compose this tone-poem. Just as the mountains change from season to season, and the view alters as one climbs the slopes, there are several distinct and contrasting sections to the piece itself. First we hear the bustle and excitement of the area in summer, as tourists flock to the foot of Snowdon; then an impression of the confident striding of those setting off to climb. After a brisk climax, the codetta to the energetic theme becomes the basis of a new, folk-like, idea which develops into a majestic anthem suggesting the grandeur of the mountain-range. The famous little train of Snowdon is brought to mind by a repetitive, mechanical idea which leads to a section combining both the main themes of excitement and grandeur, and to a powerful climax. Then, after a moment of silence, the atmosphere changes completely. Here is the ineffable solitude - and timeless beauty - of Snowdonia; but from the cellos (saxophone) we soon hear the folk-like theme slowly re-asserting itself, resolving into a peremptory fanfare which leads back to the opening mood and a return of the opening theme. But the final word is given to the 'solitude' motive, now transformed into a resolute chorale representing the eternal permanence of these extraordinary mountains.
