The Sun Will Rise Again (Concert Band - Score & Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan. I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title to honour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun. I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.- Philip SparkeDuration: 4:30

The American Road (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brubaker, Jerry

This piece for symphonic band by Jerry Brubaker is a musical excursion into the American driving experience. From majestic mountain vistas and wide open spaces to the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic. There is even a section about the beloved covered bridge. Find one and there's bound to be an interesting little two lane country road leading up to it. The piece is designed around just two themes which are tied together in the final section which the composer calls "Our Favorite Road". This can be the road to the beach, to the mountains or just simply cruisin' with the top down on a summer afternoon! Enjoy this delightful taste of Americana. Duration: 7:15

The Dark Knight, Selections from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Howard & Zimmer - Wagner, Douglas E.

Douglas Wagner has captured all the excitement and energy of Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score to The Dark Knight, the long-awaited sequel to Batman Begins. The piece opens with gothic sonorities that give way to themes associated with the complex character of district attorney Harvey Dent. In an abrupt change of mood, the chase is on as The Joker continues his well-orchestrated spree of mass mayhem and murder. Rounding out the arrangement, Batman himself leaves his mark as Gotham City's silent sentinel. Solidly scored at the young band level, the medley includes: Harvey Two-Face, Introduce a Little Anarchy and A Dark Knight. Just like the film, this is one arrangement not to miss! Duration: 3.00

Walking the Dog (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gershwin, George - Bourgeois, Derek

Walking The Dog is one of Gershwin's lighter numbers. It is a clarinet showpiece that is just as much fun as the title suggests. Taken from the movie Shall We Dance, staring none other than the great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Walking The Dog catches George Gershwin at the very height of his powers. Rather than the bustling, complex symphonic scores he was by-now accustomed to knocking out, it's a simple, elegant little stroll, as the title suggests. In fact, in the 1937 film, it accompanies a scene of dog-walking, aboard the luxury deck of an ocean liner. Since its use in the film, though, the song has taken on a life of its own and become a popular showing-off piece for clarinettists everywhere. Interestingly, it's also the only section of score from the whole of Shall We Dance that remains - the rest of the movie's music remains sadly unpublished.Duration: 3.00

Four Original Warm-Ups for Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

From his experience as a conductor and adjudicator, Bert Appermont knows that bands often experience the same problems: lack of sound control, intonation difficulties, uncontrolled articulation and insufficient phrasing. Practising these aspects is very demanding and there is little material available that is also enjoyable to play. Four Original Warm-Ups consists of four fun warm-up pieces. Each piece focuses on one of the problems without the music being dull. The four pieces work equally well when played together or as individual items either at rehearsals or in a concert. Yellow River (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Christie, Jeff - Schwalgin, Stefan

The little known English group Christie became famous overnight in 1970 when they released the record Yellow River. Yellow River is a Vietnam era song (a protest against the Vietnam War) and describes the wish of a soldier at the front to return home. Band leader, singer and composer Jeff Christie initially wrote the song for The Tremoloes, but as the group were uncertain about it he decided to record it himself. The result was a number one hit in over 25 countries! The catchy melody and beat were reason enough for Stefan Schwalgin to create this arrangement for concert band.Duration: 3.00

Pilgrims' Swing (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lloyd, Graham

The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a "walking bass" line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred years later, he could have become one of our big band leaders!Duration: 5:15
