Instrumentalstze (Aus Dem Oratorium "Saul") - Georg Friedrich Händel
Handel's Oralorio "Saul", composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. His orchestral suites were usually performed in Ihe open air. Many of his themes rank among the great inventions of musical history. They give his music dignity and greatness and at the same time they remain popular in character. The instrumental movements from 'Saul' are suitable for concerts, including those in churches, for serenades and for contests from intermediate to advanced level.

In those days this was a frequent way of making music from stage works more accessible to a wider public or of exploiting its popularity. The piece opens with a sumptuous celebratory fanfare dominated by the brass section. In the following Allegro, the woodwind instruments weave their graceful melodious plots, with occasional intense interruptions by the brass section. The piece continues with Valzers where the initial melancholic mood set by the woodwind is superseded by the brass section harkening back to modal musical mode before, once more, being taken up by the woodwind instruments. The piece closes with a gently expressive Andante. The gentle delicacy of this section moves to a moderate Allegro featuring a running dance with light-hearted irregular rhythm. The return to the opening fanfare brings us back to the anniversary celebrations of the Band and a solemn final sequence to the composition. The debut performance took place under the direction of the composer at the Gala Concert on March 28, 2009.

This piece was commissioned for the second edition of the "Suoni d'Aspromonte" National Competition which is held in Cittanova in the province of Reggio Calabria. The title, Oros, from the ancient Greek word for "mount", is a clear reference to the Greek culture that colonised Calabria and the magnificence of the Aspromonte massif that dominates the entire region: forests, towns and sea. The piece consists of three movements: Entrata, Serenata and Corteggio, offering rhythms and melodies that reflect present-day tastes rather than local musical traditions. It is specifically intended for bands with lots of young members.

What better way than an original music composition to commemorate a friendship that fate has broken off all too soon? For the Banda Sociale di Roncone (Trento) there was simply no other way. It commissioned the author to write this piece which, in its compact structure, expresses human qualities such as friendship, vitality, pain and the determination never to forget the important human and musical contribution that such people have generously made to associations and the community as a whole. Memories was written as a sign of eternal friendship linking all those who in some way share the same passions, in both good and bad times, to which there is often no answer.

Many works are composed with the precise aim of describing landscapes, atmospheres or telling stories. "Composizione Prima", on the other hand, was composed with the sole intention of experimenting with some uses of modern musical language. The piece is formally structured in three movements: allegro, adagio and fanfare, without however complying with any standard pattern. The main theme, "fanfara", can be heard several times throughout the piece. It is the only feature of this work that in any way evokes an onomatopoeic sound, to indicate the gradual approach through three dimensional space of a Napoleonic band (fanfare).

This piece was commissioned by the organising committee of the "La Prime Luz 1812" national band contest, held in Bertiolo (Udine), as the compulsory piece for category A. It consists of three movements and, rated as a first international category or national excellence grade piece, it requires the appropriate variety of timbres and instrumentalists with the necessary skills. The themes, enhanced by the use of unusual tones and compound beats, are often broken, interrupted: hence the title of the piece, intermissions, meaning interruptions. The unifying element is the musical language that, through the use of artificial modes and fourths, seeks to create a balance between tensions of differing intensity and nature.
