March of the Guards - Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven's "March of the Guards" from the opera "Fidelio" has been adapted for flexible-instrumentation bands by Andrew Glover. This stately processional march maintains an air of dignity and solemnity throughout, and adapts well to the five-part "Build-A-Band" instrumentation. Careful scoring and minimal percussion requirements make this an excellent choice for very small ensembles, or those with awkward instrumentations. An excellent choice!

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op.54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.
