Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I. GANDALF (The Wizard) II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) III. GOLLUM (Smagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moria b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dm V. HOBBITS The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its premire in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded first prize in the Sudler International Composition Competition in Chicago. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off stage and a little march for brass and flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. In 1959, William Walton was commissioned to compose music for the opening and closing credits of a television series based on Winston Churchill's History of the English-speaking Peoples. The resulting work, March for the History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra in May of that year and later published by Oxford University Press. However, the television project never materialised, and consequently Walton's score, which might have become one of his more familiar among popular audiences through television exposure, was all but forgotten. With the moderate surge in popularity that Walton's music enjoyed in the last decade of the twentieth century, this and other little-known pieces have become available for consideration. Concert Bands will enjoy the majesty and drama of this piece, very appropriate for concerts, ceremonies, and graduations.
