March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held in Camposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was 'science fiction', so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato 'trio' melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

March of the Royals is a concert march for developing concert bands. Although familiar, with all the ingredients found in a typical march, this piece is written in a more regal and elegant style that is characteristic of English style marches. The piece is written for younger musicians but directors will find that it is carefully scored to help ensembles sound older than their years.

March of the Tin Soldiers employs themes from Leon Jessels popular march, Parade of the Tin Soldiers. Originally composed for piano, it was later published for orchestra and gained international acclaim in Russia, France, and finally here in the United States on Broadway. Its probably best known for its use by the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes as part of their Christmas Spectacular in New York City. Composer Semeon Alexanderovich Chernetsky was born in 1881 and died in 1950. A trombonist and a composition student of Alexander Glazunov, he was also a prominent military bandmaster. He was named Director of the Band of the Soviet Army in 1932, and in 1935 he founded the Band of the Ministry of Defense. He composed over 70 marches including March of the Tankmen, which he wrote in 1946, as well as other works for band. The stately manner of this stirring march displays a profound sense of loyalty and national pride that is unmistakable.

Beethoven's "March of the Guards" from the opera "Fidelio" has been adapted for flexible-instrumentation bands by Andrew Glover. This stately processional march maintains an air of dignity and solemnity throughout, and adapts well to the five-part "Build-A-Band" instrumentation. Careful scoring and minimal percussion requirements make this an excellent choice for very small ensembles, or those with awkward instrumentations. An excellent choice!
