Dance No.1 (from Jazz Suite No.2) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shostakovich, Dmitri - De Meij, Johan

In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, caused him to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!Duration: 3.00

Awake the Iron - Scott Watson

"Desperta Ferro!," or "Awake the iron!" was the battle cry of Medieval Spanish soldiers called the Almogavars. In the dim light of dawn, as they prepared for battle, these fierce soldiers would beat their swords on rocks shouting this phrase. The sparks that flew from the rocks in the eerie light of dawn, together with the soldier's call to arms, would give any enemy pause. , with its insistent unisons, energetic rhythms, modal themes, and powerful percussive writing, mirrors the ferocious intensity of the medieval battlefield. This mature sounding, yet approachable work, is sure to be a favorite of both the musicians and audience. (3:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The Maid of the Mist - Herbert L. Clarke / arr. David Marlatt

This fun light piece is a great showpiece for the cornet. It is named after the sight-seeing boats for tourists in Niagara Falls. Set as a polka, there is much opportunity for the soloist to display quick fingers and light triple tonguing. To create a clean new edition, dynamics and articulations were made more consistent in the parts. Other items were changed to reflect the bands of today including F Horn parts rather than E-flat and the percussion parts have been reorganized. This is the first time this work has been available with a full conductor score rather than a piano reduction.

    Redshift - Todd Stalter

Redshift occurs when an object emitting light or other electromagnetic radiation is moving away from an observer. Those waves are shifted toward the red end of the spectrum, like the light waves astronomers measure when studying the most distant galaxies. The melodies in this piece tend to move away directionally from a central point, but in this case the "gravity" of the central note is too strong, and eventually pulls them back again.
