Mysteries of the Horizon (After Four Rene Magritte Surrealist Paintings)A Concerto for Trumpet and Wind OrchestraMysteries of the Horizon is written and dedicated to Harmen Vanhoorne, and Matthew J George and the University of St Thomas Wind Ensemble.The subject material for my concerto are four surrealist paintings by the Belgian artist Rene Magritte (1898-1967). The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke

Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames, a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comt, Eastern France.The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia, or Odile), the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind, and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence, she was dubbed Odilia -- child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows, a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax, which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeated lyrical theme. Finally, the medieval motif returns, this time presented in a festive gospel version.Duration: 7:00

Desperta Ferro!, or "Awake the iron!" was the battle cry of Medieval Spanish soldiers called the Almogavars. In the dim light of dawn, as they prepared for battle, these fierce soldiers would beat their swords on rocks shouting this phrase. The sparks that flew from the rocks in the eerie light of dawn, together with the soldier's call to arms, would give any enemy pause. Awake the Iron, with its insistent unisons, energetic rhythms, modal themes, and powerful percussive writing, mirrors the ferocious intensity of the medieval battlefield. In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, caused him to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!Duration: 2.15
