Golden Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This lyrical little piece started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little 'white-note' dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language. Duration: 3.40

Roman Pictures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oswald, Gerald
This programmatic composition depicts the history and events around the former Roman city of Flavia Solva. It was situated in the southeast province Noricum, the current region of Southern Styria, Austria. In this work, the composer portrays the grandness of the city, the beauty of its surrounding landscape, the hustle and bustle of the market place, the dangers therein and eventually the destruction by the Germanic people in the 2nd century AD. Flavia Solva was rebuilt to become a flourishing city again, but in the 5th century, its decline became a permanent reality, a fate that it shared with other cities of the Roman empire. A captivating work about a fascinating place!Duration: 8.45

Alegria (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Alegria (Joy) is a vivacious four-minute concert opener full of energy and good humour. It begins with a fanfare-like statement from the brass while the woodwind weave decorative patterns around it. The following themes are occasionally a little quirky. Although there are occasional moments when a cloud obscures the sun the music is overwhelming optimistic in spirit and fun to play. Light Music (Concert Band - Score only) - Wiffin, Rob
The title Light Music alludes to different things. Most of the music in the suite is light in nature, and is in the inherently British tradition of 'light music' - original pieces which are often descriptive but essentially melodic. In another sense the music depicts various aspects of light itself. The title itself is a trick of the light! The first movement, Lightscape, portrays shifting patterns and types of light, highlighting some details and obscuring others. It is sometimes vibrant, dancing and full of movement, and sometimes tranquil. The second movement, At the going down of the sun, considers the light of the sun as it sets. Because of the nature of his career, the composer has written a fair amount of ceremonial music and this movement is close to that genre once again. There is, in the title, a reference to the familiar Remembrance line 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them' from the poem For the Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) written in September 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. While the music is not a setting of these words - or in any way referential - there is an echo of the words 'We will remember them'.The suite finishes with Set Alight which starts off with a few combustible bars as the flame catches and then the fire is under way.Duration: 11.30

The Codebreakers (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Budiansky, Mollie
Music can at times feel as if it is a secret code. Cracking the code, be it notation on a page or a new set of vocabulary words, is cause for celebration, and "The Codebreakers" is a joyous look at music as a shared language. Scored generously to accommodate young bands both large and small, this concert work presents distinct melodies both independently and stacked on top of one another, meant to interlock like a solved puzzle. "The Codebreakers" serves as a teaching opportunity to discuss melodies and countermelodies; interpreting the same material in different styles; and listening across the band for shared lines. Every section gets a chance to be featured, and the low brass and woodwinds will especially love their moment in the spotlight. Duration: 3.15

St Stephen's Chorale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.
As a source of inspiration, the composer used the dazzling, impressive and beautiful world-famous St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Stephansdom, in Vienna. Often seen as a national symbol of Austria, it stands in the heart of Vienna and has 14 bells, each with its own name. At the beginning of the work, you can hear the ringing of the bells. The main melody softly emerges from this soundscape and returns repeatedly in various instrumentations and different harmonisations. Following a fortissimo section, the hymnal melody ebbs and fades away, the same way it appeared at the beginning. St. Stephen's Chorale is a solemn moment of contemplation in your concert.Duration: 7.00

Song of Tranquillity (Trumpet Duet with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A reflective piece featuring two trumpets and band but also playable as a solo for trumpet, trombone or euphonium. The composer wrote Song of Tranquillity just after a close friend died suddenly. It was cathartic, just written to reflect the release from pain to peace. It fits the expressive style and power of the solo brass instruments.Duration: 3.45
