    La Rodana - Ferrer Ferran

The Spanish "Pasacalle" is a very characteristic genre of Spanish musical tradition. It resembles the march but is more majestic and represents the air of pretentiousness that is so typical for the Spanish male character of the sixties. This composition is not only an example of this kind of musical genre, but it also reminds us of the most typical Spanish celebration of all - the bullfight. Take your audience away to a balmy summer night in the bullring with this great new paso doble.

The Ghost Ship - José Alberto Pina

The Ghost Ship is based on the SS American Star transatlantic shipwreck. The ship was hit by a heavy storm and when it was being towed, the tug cut the cable for no apparent reason and the American Star went adrift. After several days without being spotted, it turned up on the beach of Garcey, Fuerteventura, where, split in two pieces, became the perfect setting for mysterious events. A work full of energy, mystery and intensity that will lead us through the cabins of this famous ghost ship. The work is commissioned by the Gran Canaria Wind Orchestra.

Through its melodies and sound effects, the authoraims to transport the audience to different moments, providing an aquatic perspective from the eyes of a restless andadventurous fish. Fiesta! - Fritz Neuböck

FIESTA! is a youthful and happy piece by the Upperaustrian composer Fritz Neubck. The reasoning behind the first free bars (free approx 10 seconds) is that the music develops from kind of a soundscape. This means that the noise flows into the first properly written bars and then fades away slowly. It is up to the conductor how to create this soundscape. Then it is the turn of the "banda", the orchestra proper. The guests of this festival (namely the FIESTA!) are to be thrilled by both infectious and dreamy music.

    Skogtrollet - Hans Peter Nielsen

The Wood Troll was composed in 1950 for bassoon solo with orchestra. This arrangement can be played with bassoon- or tuba soloist. It's a funny and challenging piece for an intermediate soloist. To the conductorPlease payattention to the dynamics when the soloist play. To make shure that the balance between soloist and accompaniment is good, it's preferred to omit some players in the biggest sections of the band.

    I Byen Samarkand - Nordstoga

Odd Nordstoga is an award winning Norwegian artist who has been active since the 1990's, working in the popular-/folk music genre. I have listened to a lot of Odd Nordstogas music, in particular the Heim te mor-album. When preparing for Asky Brass Band's participation at Siddis Brass in 2008, I came across I byen Samarkand, another of Nordstogas tunes. This was from the Pilegrim album. I thought it had an exciting mix of expressions and included it in the band's repertoire for the Siddis Brass competiton. Pilegrim was initially a commision by the Bergen International Festival back in 2005, based on lyrics by author Ragnar Hovland and Odd Nordstoga's music. -Svein H. Giske -

Why Not? - Michel A. Camilo

"Why Not?" is the most well-known piece by Dominican Republic pianist/composer Michel Camilo. It appeared for the fist time on his 1984 album record "French Toast". He re-recorded it in 1985 for the "Why Not?"-album whoich is among his best-selling to date. The song has also been recorded by other artist like the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer. "Why Not?" ia a modern latin-jazz classic and this demaning arrangement for Concert Band captures the featureless and musical challenges of the original piece.

Milonga Del Angel - Astor Piazzolla

This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla's 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965.The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band. The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the sopranosax. It's not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it's recommended to listen to the record album "Zero Hour" from 1986 to get the best impression of the work.Enjoy "Milonga Del Angel" and imagine a small, dark caf in Buenos Aires!
