Caprice (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band) Andrew Batterham

VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. This arrangement was made possible through Matt's instigation and generosity. Celebration! (In Dulci Jubilo) (Wind Band) Kevin Norbury

VIEW SCORE PDF This rousing and pulsating work by Kevin Norbury forms part of the suite A Renaissance Christmas, also published by BrookWright Music. It is based on three popular carols - In Dulci Jubilo, Good Christian men, rejoice! and Ding-dong merrily on high. This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In Dulci Jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. The Spartan Warriors (CB) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich

The Sparta army is well-known in the time of the ancient Greek that the warriors would never lay down their weapons for any reason. The theme from the beginning of the piece strongly declares that the warriors are always willing to fight for their homeland. The slow movement reflects the feeling of the warriors when they are far away from their loved one due to their duty. The composers intently uses the harmony that gives a hopeful feeling but also painful at the same time. The audience can hear the bell during the piece. It is the symbol of the clock towers which located in every cities. Everytime that the warriors leaves a city, the sound of the bell becomes softer and softer until it disappears. Only at the end of the piece that the bell rings only one last time after the majestical theme. It's the bell of victory!

Panic Button (CB) - Paul Saggers

Panic Button was commissioned by Bert Van Thienen especially for 2022 World Music Contest in Kerkrade (NL). The composer was given complete freedom musically, however, he was given two conditions. First, it had to be an atypical work, a composition that puts the orchestra in a different perspective than the traditional repertoire and be suitable for both concert and competition stages. Second, it had to give the musicians the opportunity to go completely wild for a while. On the one hand, to shake off any stress and, on the other, to give them energy for the rest of the program. Enjoy!

    Boom Town

Boom Town evokes the energetic, fast-paced life of a frontier town during the American West. The piece is inspired by the sounds of construction and dynamite blasts as well as the "boom" of pre-concert adjustments made by musicians. The performance incorporates a unique element where musicians lift their chairs and drop them in time with the rhythm, creating an explosive effect. While this should be done safely, it adds to the visual and auditory excitement. The piece alternates between intense, rhythmic passages and quieter, more lyrical moments, with careful attention given to dynamics and articulation. It also offers an opportunity for audience participation during the "Boom! Boom!" shouts.
