The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. Solemnity was composed when the composer came back from his first Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Inspired by all the concert bands performing there, and all the fellow composers met at this occasion, he decided to write a kind of fanfare work, leading to a fast theme on a driving rhythm.The piece begins like a fanfare with a solemn character which gives the title of the work, the brass here have a nice part to play. Then, a new theme full of energy, using the same rhythmic motive as the fanfare theme, is exposed by the high woodwinds and finally by more instruments. The central part is a slow one, where a melancolic theme is exposed by the oboe, and finally the rest of the band. After a fugato section, the energic theme is back to lead to a brilliant coda.

Limbricht, near Sittard, in the late 17th century. Throughout her life, Entgen Luijten is used to going her own way, in family matters, in business and in love. The lord of the castle is eager for a confession, for which he uses every means made available to him by the Inquisition. But what if Entgen holds out against all odds?

£33.10Hunyadi Indul - Ferenc Erkel
The first performance of the opera "Hunyadi Lszl" by Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) at the National Theater in Pest took place in times that foreboded the revolt of 1848. The rise of this stage work to Hungary's national opera and its ensuing immediate great success probably is due to the plot itself and the atmosphere prevailing in the country at that time. The great flute virtuoso and composer Franz Doppler (1821-1883) asked "Erkel to grant permission to write a march on the basis of motifs from this opera for my citizen's guards band, which he explicitly consented to ..." From the days of the revolution against Habsburg until today the "Hunyadi indul" ("March on Motifs of theOpera 'Hunyadi'") has remained to be popular throughout and therefore may rightly be addressed as a Hungarian national march.

Sverre Bergh (1915-1980) was a central character in the music scene in Bergen, both as a musical leader at "Den Nationale Scene" (theatre) and as a director for the "Festspillene" music festival. He was an arranger and pianist for the NorwegianBroadcasting Company (NRK), and wrote stage- and film scores as well as piano pieces. "Country-Folk in Town" is one movement from "Village Sketches". This small overture was written for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
