This Ode to Joy is the choral finale of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, composed in 1823, using a poem written in 1785 by Friedrich von Schiller. During the Olympic Games of 1956, 1960 and 1964, Ode to Joy was played as the national anthem for the German Unity Team, and in 1972 it was chosen as the anthem for the Council of Europe. In 1985, it was chosen by the Heads of State, and the Government of the European Union as the official anthem of the European Union.

Choir set available at 130224040!This Hymn of Fraternity is in fact the final movement of Serge Lancen's 'Oecumenical Poem'. This large religious composition, lasting over 80 minutes, was written for solo voices, mixed choir, children's choir, organ and symphony orchestra. It was premiered in Our Lady's Cathedral at Laon. The composer made a new orchestration for wind band of this 'Hymn of Fraternity' in 1980. The text was translated into English, Dutch and German.

Manfred Schneider (1953), musician with the German Army Band Heeresmusikkorps 300 in Koblenz, has already proved his merits with his overture 'Uspide Down', the 'Song of Freedom' and the rhythmical etude 'Rock and Go', all published with Molenaar edition. This 'Rock Symphony' consists of contemporary rhythms alternating with more lyrical passages. Precisely these contrasts and the diversity of the composition make it extremely fascinating.

The American pianist and composer Cy Coleman(1929) is certainly best known as the author of several musical comedies such as Wildcat (1960), Sweet Charity (1966), Seesaw (1973) and of course Barnum (1978). He also composed a lot of film music and several songs, such as Hey look me over. Big Spender illustrates Coleman's talent as creator of fine melodies. Many will recognize this one, very skilfully arranged for wind band by the German composer Josef Hastreiter.

The German composer and arranger Manfred Schneider has been playing for many years with the military band Heeresmusikkorps 300 at Cologne. In the meantime he got a reputation as composer of light symphonic music for concert band in Germany and abroad. In the Molenaar Edition catalogue you find already several of his compositions, such as Upside Down, Song of Freedom, the rhythmical study Rock and Go and the most popular Rock Symphonie. Schneider is well at ease in today's musical styles and this time he was inspired by jazz music. The three-part Jazz Suite starts with a nice jazz waltz; the more quiet second part is a fine jazz ballad, whereas the final part is an exuberant jazz samba. A com-plete percussion section and a piano will provide the typical jazz spirit.

The zeppelin airship "Hindenburg", named after the German Reich President Paul von Hindenburg, was one of the largest airships ever built. The maiden voyage of the airship was in March 1936, but on May 6, 1937 it was destroyed during landing in Lakehurst New Jersey (America), when the hydrogen filling caught fire. 36 people including a member of the landing party lost their lives. There are various theories about how this accident might have occurred.

German composer Hans Leo Hassler composed this suite at the end of the 16th century. Hassler was a student of the famous composer Gabrieli who mainly wrote for brass ensembles. This is the reason why Hassler, while only composing a relatively smaller amount of work, composed mainly for the same type of ensemble. This arrangement from Jan van Beekum is characteristic of it's time and is for a 5 voice, flexible setting and percussion.

The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style.An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics.Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles:Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantesThe Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.
