Apophenia - Peter Meechan
"Apophenia is the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data."Apophenia is a trumpet concerto in three movements written for American trumpet virtuoso Rex Richardson. Each of the three movements features a different instrument; Movement 1 is for the Bb trumpet, the second is for flugel horn and trumpet, and the third is for trumpet and piccolo trumpet.Each of the three movements of Apophenia relate to the phenomenon of viewing Dark Side of the Rainbow - a name used to refer to the act of listening to the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon whilst watching the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, where moments where the film and the album appear to correspond with each other.Movement 1 is a fast a furious movement. Solo and ensemble interact at high tempo, swapping and creating new ideas, leading each other in new directions. Aside from the trumpet soloist, the kit player also acts as a quasi soloist.The second movement takes its musical inspiration from the Pink Floyd song Us and Them. It is during this segment of the film that some of the most amazing moments of connection happen.The final movement is a dance - and a tour de force for the soloist who begins on the Bb trumpet, before switching to the piccolo trumpet (or Eb trumpet) for the fast and furious finale. Many of the coincidences from Dark Side of the Rainbow relate to dancing, however, as long as a piece of music is the same tempo as the original, and the time signature is a regular one, this could be the case across most films. So the composer chose to write a dance that wouldn't synchronise to too many existing dance scenes!The soloist is free to improvise their own cadenza.Apophenia is dedicated to Rex Richardson.

Sinfonietta - Score and Parts - Rob Wiffin
Program NotesSinfonietta is a challenging, extended work for symphonic wind band. It is in three movements: Dance with the Devil, A Glimpse of Paradise and Reyes Magos. The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight – ‘Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth...Put out my hand, and touched the face of God’ - with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. I wrote Sinfonietta while living in Spain and there January 6th, rather than Christmas Day, is the main day of present-giving, marking the Epiphany, the arrival of the Kings from the Orient at the Nativity.Sinfonietta is technically and expressively demanding but is written within the realms of tonal language.

Stai si, defenda romontsch, tiu vegl lungatg (Stand up, defend your old Romansh language): This composition was named after a quotation from a poem by famous Romansh poet Giachen Casper Muoth. The arrangement deals with various well known songs for male choir such as A Trun sut igl ischi (In Trun under the malpe tree), Si sededesta Rezia (Wake up, land of Raetia), Il pur suveran (The independent farmer) or Il paun palus (The rosted bread). An atmospheric beginning over a pedal point uses quotations from these songs and leads eventually into a dark but warmly orchestrated section on Nossa viarva (Our language) by H. Erni. The piece ends, once more quoting A Trun sut igl ischi by J. Heim, a dedication to struggle for freedom and independence.

Soliloquies From A Quiet Place - Peter Meechan
soliloquyn."An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers"During summer 2018 I took a vacation at a family cabin on the banks of Buffalo Pound Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is a beautifully isolated location, which provides for a near perfect view of the night skies. Gradually, as your eyes adjust to the dark, more and more stars reveal themselves to you. Time seems to stop, and you can't help reflecting in every way possible. As insignificant as viewing the heavens like this can make you feel, you also know your fleeting view is a unique moment, a moment you will never see end.One night, having sat outside until the sun began to rise, I went back inside and wrote a short chorale at the piano. It didn't have a place in any piece I was writing at that time but knew those few measures of reflection would find their place in a composition in the future - and it is from those few measures that Soliloquies From A Quiet Place grew.Told through the two trumpet soloists, these are my reflections and thoughts from that night and many others sat gazing in to the heavens.Soliloquies From A Quiet Place was written for soloists Ryan Anthony and Jens Lindemann, conductor Jerry Junkin, and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble. Taking the Fifth - Peter Meechan

The Old Man of Lochnager is a three-movement suite for wind band based on the composer's ballet score of the same name. The Dance of the Eagle describes the majestic and dynamic Lord of the Air, who guides the Old Man on his adventures; Dark Lochnagar is a wistful arrangement of a 19th-century Scottish ballad to accompany the Old Man finding his true love; and Scottish Dances depicts a joyous Highlands dance festival during which the Old Man rediscovers his lost youth.Wind Band Grade 5: AdvancedDuration: 13 minutes.

The Winds Of Power - Nigel Hess
Unlike Nigel Hess's other works for wind band, The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.
