With Sweet Jubilation - James Curnow
Explore different settings of the Medieval Latin carol "In Dulci Jubilo" via this solid arrangement by James Curnow. Opening with an exquisite "Brass Choir" section a la Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) and progressing through a "Woodwind Choir" section in the later J.S.Bach style, WITH SWEET JUBILATION is wonderful "style study" material. "Sle Jolekveld" was arranged for Kongelige Norske Marines Musikkorps (The Royal Norwegian Navy Band) for their CD-recording "Julestemning"(2009) featuring Solveig Kringlebotn as soprano soloist and the choir of Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ingar Bergby.The arrangement works very well for a collaborative concert for band and SATB choir and possible soprano soloist. However it will also work well also for concert band alone.

This selection was commissioned by the Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association for the CODA Ninth Grade Honor Band. After an energetic opening, a lyrical legato section is introduced by a woodwind choir and answered by a brass choir before returning to the original excitement of the opening section. A beautiful slower section in 3/4 time follows before the opening section returns, taking the piece to a strong, bold ending.

£61.00Bone Pastor-Guter Hirte - Franz Krenn
Music: Franz Krenn, Text: Ferry Krauss, Arrangement: Franz WatzFranz Krenn (1816 - 1897) was an organist, a conductor and later also teacher at the Conservatory of music of the 'Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde' in Vienna. The Graduale is part of the Roman Catholic liturgy: the vocal soloist sings a psalm or part of a psalm and the audience answers by singing the chorus 'Responsorium' (a kind of answer). The pastoral text is clearly related to the Christmas story. Krenn has written this piece for one male voice, choir and string accompaniment. This version can be performed with singers and orchestra, without singing or with a mixed instrumentation. The solo male voice can also be performed by a tenor instrument. The four-part score for mixed choir has been arranged for wind ensemble (at least a quartet). The original score for strings has been arranged for large wind orchestra, but thanks to the cue notes the piece can also be performed by smaller ensembles in a most satisfactory way. The numerous instrumentation possibilities are clearly indicated in the instrumentation list and range from a wind quartet to a full band. The percussion parts are 'ad libitum'.

It was also premiered over there, high in the mountains. It was sung (in four parts) by all the participants. This work can be played by a band, sung by a choir, or performed by the combination of both band and choir.

Alfred Evensen (1883 - 1942) was born in Troms, but moved to Harstad 16 years old to start as a student at The Military School of Music. He was director and chief of the military band in 1918, and worked there for 12 years. In 1930 he was appointedto conductor of the military band in Bergen, and worked there until he was appointed to take over from Johannes Hanssen (Valdres march) as manager and conductor of the military band in Oslo in 1934.With this band he participated in a majorinternational military music collection in Paris in 1935 With a great success. In addition to his work in military music, he was a highly respected conductor of choir and composed, in additionto his compositions for bands, many songs for choir.He died in Oslo, after he was arrested because of his resistance against the German occupation. At his own request he was buried in Harstad, and there is also a statue of him.Norwegian Dance No. 1 and No. 2 dates from 1911 and 1912respectively. They are composed in the style of Grieg's Norwegian Dances, Op. 35, but, unlike Grieg, Evensen has used his own themes for the compositions.
