£79.99Commemoration - James Barnes
Commemoration was commissioned by the members of the Northwest North Carolina Bandmasters Association to recognize the distinguished career of Dr. William A. Gora, the longtime Director of Bands at Appalachian State University, who passed away in 2015. Bill was loved by his students, respected by his peers and cherised by his many friends. A brilliant musician, a fine conductor and a warm human being with a marvelous sense of humor, Bill has been sorely missed by all. Gora was friends with composer James Barnes for over 40 years. They met when Barnes was still in graduate school at Kansas and Gora had just finished his DMA at the University of Florida. When the NNCBDA asked Barnes to compose a work in Bill's honor, he was honored to do so. He decided to write a cheerful work for Bill, full of energy, color and melody, because he knew this is what he would have wanted; no funeral dirges for Bill Gora. The soft middle portion of the work, a hymn-like tune scored in saxophone choir, was included because Bill was a fine saxophonist and, for many years, the saxophone teacher at ASU.

As the title implies, the work expresses the deep religious emotions of the promises made by God to mankind. Two thematic elements are employed: the first, a dramatic proclamation, is introduced by horns and subsequently taken bytrumpets and woodwinds - the second plaintive theme, in the manner of a supplication, is presented by oboes followed by flutes and clarinets. The first theme returns leading to a climactic section by the full ensemble. Adevelopment section focuses on fragments from the principal theme culminating in a brief brass fanfare based on the earlier accompanying motives. The recapitulation of the principal theme brings the work to a quiet and peacefulclose. (8:00)

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher.In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The premire, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!

£84.99A Copland Portrait - David Conte
Originally commissioned by maestro Neal Gittleman, A Copland Portrait was premiered by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2000. In March of 2015, First Lieutenant Ryan Nowlin's transcription of this work for band was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Jason Fettig. ECS Publishing is proud to offer both the band and the orchestra version. Conte on the creation of this overture: "I set out quite consciously to evoke various aspects of Copland's work by combining and recombining them within the terms of my own musical personality. For example, the first theme of A Copland Portrait combines the character of a theme from The Red Pony with the rhythmic texture of the scherzo of the Third Symphony. While composing the piece I was conscious of drawing inspiration from many of Copland's works; a melodic shape here, a harmonic gesture there, until I arrived at something that felt fresh and new to me. A Copland Portrait is cast in a traditional Sonata-Allegro form. After a vigorous, syncopated orchestral tutti, the first theme is announced in the solo oboe, accompanied by a steady eighth-note ostinato. Playful interjections are stated in the flute and bassoon. The syncopated tutti returns; the first theme is stated again, this time in the low winds. This theme builds to a colorful climax, leading into a more dissonant transition section, which gradually slows and gives way to a lilting, more lyrical second theme in the clarinet. After some modest development of the second theme, a more plaintive theme stated in the muted trumpet brings the exposition to a close. A scherzando development section follows; the first four notes of the first theme are inverted and subjected to various contrapuntal treatments. This development section ends with a return of the opening syncopated motive, leading into a recapitulation of the first theme, this time in canon, and the second theme and closing theme, broadly sung. A brilliant toccata-style coda brings A Copland Portrait to a brisk conclusion."

From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Norge i rdt, hvitt og bltt ("Norway in Red, White and Blue") was commissioned by the Oslo Fagott Choir (yes, that is indeed a gay men's choir) for a concert with The Staff Band of the Armed Forces in 2015. I was given artistic licence to write a more modern and somewhat 'eclectic' arrangement for this originally Swedish melody written by Lars-Erik Larsson, which became something of a national liberation anthem when Nazi occupation ended in May 1945 - then with new lyrics by Finn B, Bias Bernhoft and Arild Feldborg.After the premiere in Oslo, and a music video with Oslo Fagott Choir and The Staff Band, broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Constitution Day during coronavirus lockdown in 2020, I was approached by many to write an instrumental version of the arrangement for concert band. Tuba Libre! was commissioned by Eirik Gjerdevik, Tubaist with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and also widely sought after as a soloist and conductor.The work is the first major work the composer wrote for Brass Band.Eirik Gjerdevik recorded the work on his album "Eirik the Viking", a recording which also feature Stavanger Brass Band conducted by Morten E. Hansen. The album was released by Lawo Classics in 2014 (LWC 1064).The version for Concert Band was also premiered by Eirik Gjerdevik, this time conducted by the composer.
