    Terminal Velocity - Michael Oare

Inspired by the exhilaration of sky diving, this is an exciting and dynamicwork for young bands, and fittingly composed all in one constant tempo. Dur: 2:20

    Interruptions - Steven Bryant

Interruptions is a new, shorter version of one of Bryant's earliest works, Interruption Overture, and is filled with quirky humor and musical mayhem! The music begins with a lively melody using familiar, comfortable harmonies, butis soon interrupted by abrupt dissonance. The music resumes its earlier character, but these loud interruptions rudely reappear, and the music begins to take abrupt turns through different tonalities. The work finally settles intoa four-on-the-floor groove, as the opening melody and the interruptive material learn to coexist, leading to a climactic conclusion. A thoroughly enjoyable work for young bands!

Purple Whispers - Richard L. Saucedo

This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: Whispers move in colored flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know. As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition. Dur: 5:15 Recorded by the Marshall University Wind Symphony - Steve Barnett, conductor

Swamp Rabbit Stomp - Michael Sweeney

Commissioned by the 2015 South Carolina All-State Junior Band and written to celebrate the natural scenic beauty of that state's famed Swamp Rabbit Trail, Michael Sweeney's Swamp Rabbit Stomp is a joyous romp of rhythm and harmony. Exploring layers of sounds as well as an expanded role for the percussion section, this work also calls for a middle section where all members of the band perform with egg shakers. A substantial work, but with a dash of fun! Dur: 7:15

    Slides Rule! - Mike Hannickel

Band directors work hard to build balanced ensembles, but it's often a challenge to keep the trombone section strong. Trombone players carry one of the larger instruments back and forth to school and they don't get to play thetune as often as they would like. Help keep them committed to the group by spotlighting the trombone section at your next concert with this enjoyable feature. Dur: 1:50

    1944 - Alex Poelman

At the end of 1944, Allied troops invaded the Netherlands from Belgium. Hope and longing for freedom, which now seemed so close, swept through the Netherlands: Operation Market Garden was launched. Huge numbers of paratroopers made the dangerous jump to take over enemy territory on the south side of the Rhine. Fierce fighting and attempts to cross and secure the river resulted in heavy casualties for the liberating forces. Ground support from the south came too late and there was no alternative but to call off Operation Market Garden. What looked like a quick liberation of the Netherlands turned into a long, bitter struggle. To make matters worse, a harsh winter followed: hunger and cold ate away at hope and the prospect of a liberated Netherlands. The composition 1944 uses original radio fragments from 1944 to describe these events.Download the electronic sounds:fragmentADownload the electronic sounds:fragmentBDownload the electronic sounds:fragmentCDownload the electronic sounds:fragmentD

Ever Forward, Ever Onward - Amy Webb

Ever Forward, Ever Onward is a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up. The lines are interesting, too, no matter what instrument you can play. Students will love to play this and I hope you have fun. 1st trumpet's highest note is A.
