VIEW SCORE PDFThis rousing and pulsating work by Kevin Norbury forms part of the suite A Renaissance Christmas, also published by BrookWright Music. It is based on three popular carols - In Dulci Jubilo, Good Christian men, rejoice! and Ding-dong merrily on high.This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. VIEW SCORE PDFThis beautiful and serene setting of the well known carol Quem Pastores Laudavere features as part of a suite by Kevin Norbury entitled A Renaissance Christmas (available from BrookWright Music). This 14th-century melody was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. VIEW SCORE PDFA Coventry Rhapsody is based on The Coventry Carol, which dates back to the 16th century and is one of three songs from a nativity play entitled Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors which was traditionally performed in Coventry. The carol itself depicts the Massacre of the Innocents in the nativity narrative from the Gospel of Matthew, in which King Herod, orders the execution of all baby boys under the age of two in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Snippets of the carol can be heard throughout the work in different guises. VIEW SCORE PDFCaprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber.In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument.The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed.Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will.
