Overture for Wind Band, Op. 24 - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Felix Mendelssohn composed the first of his two works for wind band in 1824 at the age of 15. This work, originally entitled Notturno, was scored for eleven winds. It was later rescored for a much larger contingent and publishedas Overture for Wind Band. The work is in two main sections, an extended andante introduction and the main body of the overture marked allegro vivace. While not generally considered one of Mendelssohn's masterworks, the Overtureof Band is nonetheless a valuable part of the band's early repertoire. This edition replaces the obsolete instruments with their modern versions and resolves many inconsistencies that plagued the original score.

American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honour of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favourite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.Duration: 4.15

To convey the unity among their musicians, many music societies over the years, including the band that commissioned this composition, have chosen this name. The literal translation of Color Concordia is colour harmony. Consequently, the composer has gratefully used the many ranges of colouring of the concert band for the instrumentation of this work. When visiting Oslo I always try to manage to see the Castle Guards Parade marching from Akershus Fortress to the Royal Castle (in the summer season). There is always a feeling of spirit and solemnity when the military band leads the procession through the city and the Karl Johan Street up to the Castle, for the changing of the Castle Guards. A dear tradition for the locals as well as visitors to the Norwegian capitol. Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditional march form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into a second theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional 'bass strain', played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicately scored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close. Duration: 4.00
