As the title suggests, this is a fiery and energetic, dynamic overture. Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write the piece by the Japanese 'Band of the NEC-Tamagawa Plant' on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. From the first measure, the brass section sets the scene with rhythmical motives. Gradually we hear melodic and playful themes, often supported by (poly)rhythmic figures. A fermate in the trombone section prepares the way for the final theme, which virtuosically leads into a reprise of the first fanfare. The dynamic circle closes!

Incandescent Sky - Robert Sheldon
This sparkling concert overture commemorates the 30th anniversary of the First Coast Wind Symphony. An opening majestic fanfare leads to a buoyant main theme in 12/8 time. A lyrical contrasting section is as rich in melodic content as it is passion. The piece, being in a modified rondo form restates a variation of the main theme before returning to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion.

The overture Harlequin was composed in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Federation of Wind Band conductors. The striking ascending and descending melodic lines, heard throughout the composition, together with the intricate rhythm, form an entertaining whole. The work begins with a sparkling opening in which the strong rhythmic brass passages are surrounded by virtuoso woodwind embellishments. The theme of the energetic opening later returns in the Andante Rubato, but in a very different form. The middle movement develops towards a partial repeat of the opening section which leads quickly into a thundering Presto finale.

Sinfonietta No.1 was commissioned by the Foundation of Friends of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. It was first performed by them in 'De Doelen', Rotterdam on the 13th November 1990 (in a joint concert with the Royal Marines Band from Great Britain) which celebrated the 325th anniversary of the Netherlands Marine Corps and coincided with the 45th anniversary of the band and the 175th anniversary of naval music in the Netherlands.The work is in three, linked movements:I: OvertureSeveral contrasting motivic ideas open the work, but none manage to develop into a theme of any sort. Eventually a short theme appears on clarinet, alto saxophone and horn but it is swept away by runs of triplets from the woodwinds. The theme returns, accompanied by the triplets from the woodwinds. The theme returns, accompanied by the triplets, and this leads to a return of the opening material to close the movement.II: AriaThe second movement opens with violent outbursts from the timpani until a simple, mournful tune is presented by flute and bassoon over a sparse accompaniment by the lower brass. Trumpets introduce a quicker, turbulent central section but this leads back to a brief repeat of the original tune, bringing the movement to a peaceful close.III. ScherzoThe final movement is a fast and furious scherzo which bursts into life with a flurry of notes. The vivacious main (woodwind) theme is first played by the flutes and then by the whole woodwind section. A cornet then takes centre stage with a fanfare-like theme which is then taken up by the brass. A bridge passage then leads to a version of this theme for full band. The original flute tune is then developed until the horns introduce a chorale tune which is taken up by saxes and then full band until the opening material reappears. Stepstones was commissioned by the Harmonie Victoria Titeng from Ttange (Luxembourg) for its 125th anniversary. The composer references the music of Rossini, who died 25 years before the commissioning band was founded. The second element this work refers to the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein who was born at the time the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.Duration: 6.15

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the Bronze Age. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energetic overture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel. This short overture, originally titled Sapper 300 was commissioned for the 300th Anniversary of the Corps of Royal Engineers in July 2016. It is formed from the Royal Engineers Regimental March Wings and the Corps song Hurrah for the CRE. Wings itself comprises two tunes - The Path across the Hills and Flugel! Flugel!. Hurrah for the CRE is sung to the traditional South African tune Daar le die ding. All the main melodic material is derived from one of these, although they are often spliced together in unusual ways and set in a manner progressing from dark to light. The work was first performed at the ?€Sapper 300?€ Concert at Rochester Castle, 17 July 2016.
