Spirit Of ?44 - Cotter
Toward the end of WWII, both sides had amassed a great number of POW's. These people were used as labor to build roads and bridges. To keep moral high, the POW's made up songs that were sung or whistled. These tunes made the work go faster and were used to communicate messages. The "Spirit of '44" was written in honor of those valiant men and women. Try whistling the melody. It might raise your spirits, too.

£89.99Centennial Prelude - Jan Van der Roost
This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

£239.99Stonehenge - Jan Van der Roost
This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.

£68.80Little Machine - Scott Rogers
Little Machine is built on an eigth-note pulse and interlocking parts. Everybody has an important piece of the action, and the Little Machine just doesn't run unless all of the parts are in place. The piece chugs along until it runs out of gas at the end.

£121.00Tock - Kenneth Froelich
Tock is a single movement work for concert band that uses percussion and asymmetrical rhythms to mimic the "tocking" of a broken clock. The repetition of melodies and of motive fragments are used to establish a regular pulse; however, while this pulse is steady, it is not even. A five-four time signature, a syncopated bass line and irregular phrases are all used to offset the central beat of the music. Much like the clock, the end result is a dance that seems consistent but is in fact "broken." Its a work that is both fascinating and creative, excellent cutting-edge writing for upper-level ensembles.

£83.00Letter From Home - Aaron Copland
Letter from Home was commissioned as a patriotic work in 1944 by Paul Whiteman and his Radio Hall of Fame Orchestra. Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. This sensitive transcription by Brian Belski has produced another wonderful wind band setting from America's most iconic composer." Craig Kirchoff (Windependence Series Editor)
