Catalyst - Rob Romeyn
Driving rhythms, contemporary harmonies, stark contrasts, and multi-meter are the "Catalyst" for excitement and intrigue in this epic programmatic work by Rob Romeyn. We begin with an explosion of rhythmic energy and motion. From here, an intriguing melodic theme is introduced amid a lighter texture. As the music develops, this melodic theme is expanded upon rhythmically and through a variety of harmonic variations. A secondary theme enters with a light and almost transparent quality, offering an opportunity to showcase expressive musicality in a mature setting. Further development then ensues, with the music growing ever stronger and stronger, with the emotion practically leaping off of the page. Walkabout - A Kaleidoscopic Journey for Band - John Brakstad
The concept of Walkabout comes originally from the Australian aborigines. A Walkabout is a journey where the goal is of less importance (even though you always end up where you started). It is the journey itself, and what you experience on the way, that is important. That could mean different moods, challenges, experiences in nature, various kinds of people, humour, joy, drama etc. The composition Walkabout consists of a several miniatures and episodes which are woven together. Someof the working titles for the miniatures have been: Call of the Unknown, Walk, Nightfall, At the Lake, Panorama, The Happy Man and The Sad Man, The Clown, The Valiant, Struggle and Relief, and Return to Home. The recurrent theme, which isheard at the beginning of the piece, symbolises the journey and the call of the unknown. Kaleidoscopic means Changing colours and patterns.

Sugar Plum Samba - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
American pop culture is full of examples of the merging and melding of different artistic styles that end up with surprising and entertaining results. This work for young band is no exception as the timeless music of Tchaikovsky often heard at the holidays trades in ballet shoes for guiros and timbales. Many of the original rhythms of the ballet music have been altered to convey an authentic-sounding samba dance style. Holding true to the form of the original work, this setting of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy presents a decidedly different twist on a holiday classic, allowing students to learn to play a wonderful Latin dance style.

Wilten Festival Overture - Philip Sparke
To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. A great experience for the whole band!
