Every now and then he stops to listen to the sound of -what he is hoping for- the ever lasting surf. It is a romantic, contemplative night on the beach in the Netherlands.

Choral Prelude starts with an impressionistic introduction, which leads to the mainstay of the composition, the actual choral tune played by the horns and basses.This theme is repeated several times under different aspects and in different orchestral settings. There is much variation in the dynamics and the work ends with a solemn and imposing final. Here is an ideal work to ge a good tone balance with the band.

After the 'Coffee Serenade' and 'Hymne au Vin' the composer continues his 'drinks cycle' with an ode to tea, entitled 'High Tea'. It is an elegant composition based on the famous English tradition which has now been imitated all over Europe. In the 'Coffee Serenade' a coffee cup was used as 'solo instrument'. In order to spare the fragile tea service a triangle is used to evoke the tinkle sound.

Commissioned by the NIB, the Dutch Wind Music Institute, with the financial support of the 'Fonds voor de scheppende Toonkunst'.CommentaryThis suite brings us back to the 18th century when an important part of the musical life took place in the salons, the favorite quarters of monarchs and important people.There is a ball and we can hear the music in four successive short movements.1. Entree. After an opening fanfare we see the solemn reception of the guests. The composer uses some 17th century musical principles such as the echo dynamics.2. Invitation a la Danse. The guests proceed to the ballroom and are officially introduced. This movement has a 'classical' character.3. Chiaconna. A solemn dance of Spanish origin with a single theme that is repeated with different embellishments and accompaniments.4. Danse Finale. A cheerful dance announces the departure of the guests, but, for sure, the feast will have lasted much longer than this suite.

It was for the 80 anniversary as musician of Mr. Denessen that the wind band Harmonie St. Cecilia' at Tegelen, The Netherlands asked me to write this march. As his slogan is 'Playing music keeps me fit' the 94 year old Wiel Denessen still plays the flute in the band and is an example for many a musician. This march is a homage to a special music amateur, an exemplary band member, but above all a man of great qualities.The march 'Giubilare Flautissimo' was premiered at the anniversary concert on 17 November 1996.Harald Suilen

£253.70Rainforest Concerto - Saskia Apon
Rainforest Concerto has been commissioned by the Brass Band Rijnmond. This double concerto for two trombones and wind band consists of three parts with the cadenza in the slow niddle movement. Saskia Apon was inspired by the threat of the destruction of the rainforest. In the first part, Creation, we hear an accelerated reproduction of the birth of this impressive natural phenomenon. We hear the first birds, we see the growth of the mangrove trees and we witness the struggle for light and the force necessary to keep the realized equilibrium in a perpetual balance.The second part, Ode, is a tribute to the wonder and splendour of the rainforest. By means of subtle and extremely delicate sonorities we hear how nature adds an inestimable value to the rainforest. However it is also extremely fragile and this engenders a certain melancholy due to the awareness of man's impotence to respect this beautiful nature.In the last part, Contra Demolition, we hear the threatening decline, but also the revolt against this possible ruin. It is a heartfelt cry to leave nuture in peace and to work hard for the preservation of the beauty and the value of the rainforest.

Aquila Chrysaetos is the Latin name for the golden eagle, one of the largest birds of prey.This piece by Alex Poelman suggests the power emanating from this big predatory bird The day dawns and from over the mountain an eagle appears, smoothly riding the wind looking for prey (the main theme). When his eagle eyes spot a prey, he launches an attack. He tosses the prey off the cliff. After consuming the animal the main theme comes back and the bird flies away in heroic glory.

Contos da Lua Nova (New Moon Tales) is inspired by stories always present in the composer's mind. Some of them marked his childhood, others are part of his cultural range as an adult. In this ouverture the composer wanted to reaffirm the child inside of each grown-up, reinventing each story with instrumental resources.Besides the instrumental version, this piece was conceived having choral interventions, optionally. The choral works more like an instrument, having the function of identifying each story.

Mussorgsky wrote 'Pictures at an Exhibition' after visiting an exhibition of paintings by his late friend Viktor Hartmann in 1874. This sixteen part suite is extremely well suited to be performed by a symphonic band: after a series of nice solo passages the work ends with a fantastic apotheosis 'The Great Gate of Kiev'.

A long time ago... in a small village near the Dutch city of Delft two friends had a rather hazardous idea: they wanted to write a sequel to the legendary 'Star Wars' cycle. The idea was realized and landed on the desk of the (film) director. However, the latter had already developed his own ideas and thanked them for the trouble.Today, more than twenty years later, the former musical sketches have been assembled in an accessible suite that will sound familiar to many listeners. It is an attempt still to realize part of the original idea and we do hope you will enjoy it.
