£140.80Vespri Siciliani - Giuseppe Verdi
In 1885 Verdi wrote I Vespri Siciliani, an opera which would provide him with an international reputation. The overture is based on motifs and themes from the opera, used in a rhapsodic way. A mysterious introduction and several energetic themes alternate with some passionate melodies, the secret of which only Verdi had. The French composer and conductor Paul Desprey made this arrangement for symphonic band.

£286.40Symphonie Pour Orchestre D'Harmonie - Ida Gotkovsky
This Symphony in two parts is an early work from the celebrated composer Ida Gotkovsky. Attracted by composition from her earliest years, Ida Gotkovsky entered the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris. After passing some years in these classes in the rue de Madrid, she was awarded all the leading prizes for writing and composition. She also gained many international awards including the Prix Blumenthal and the Prix de l'Institut de France. This artist is situated in the French School which, in her view, is the ideal synthesis of the Art of Music. Chamber music, symphonic music, lyrical music, ballet music. All are widely represented among her works. Numerous State commissions have been awarded to her, including an Opera 'Le reve de Makar' for which she wrote the libretto herself. This work was crowned with the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris. At the age of 32 she wrote this impressive and beautiful masterpiece in the style of Ravel.

Drieluik is one of the pearls in the repertoire, which is specifically written for wind band. It is an interesting piece in a contemporary idiom that was written ahead of its time (1969). This is a revised and colourful orchestration, and hopefully returns Triptych to its former glory, and gives it the attention it deserves. It is an exciting composition for the musicians, with many chamber music type moments, various solo opportunities and full of energy.

I. Quiet but not strolling - This part is based on two folk songs 'Digo Janeto' and 'Avn un bu Castu' played on a bourdon accompaniment with an incorporated canonic theme.II. Alert - This part is based on the popular song 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon'.III. Slightly rocking - An original lullaby with flexible instrumentation.IV. Lively and Cheerful - This part is based on the beautiful folksong 'Lou roussigno que volo'; the composer uses the band as if it were one big tambourin.This work obtained a Second Prize at the International Composition Contest at Hilvarenbeek, The Netherlands in 1976.

Badings was an influential figure in 20th-century classical music, known for his innovative approach to composition and the use of electronic music. "I TRE RE" is a traditional folk song from Ticino, a region in Switzerland. The song is an important part of local folklore and is often performed by regional music groups such as the Bandella di Tremona. The melody and lyrics of "I TRE RE" are traditional and reflect the rich cultural history of Ticino.Composed for the Music Festival of Uster (Switzerland) in 1981.

ARACHNE won the 1983 Le Havre Wind Composition Contest (France). It was premiered by the Le Havre Municipal Symphonic Band, conducted by Claude Decugis.ARACHNE is a mythological character, who was an expert in weaving. The nymphs, daughters of Zeus, pay her a visit and Arachne boasts that she could even win from the goddess Athena at a weaving contest. Disguised as an old woman, Athena, also pays a visit to Arachne, who maintains the challenge. After a severe warning, Athene takes off her disguise and accepts the challenge.They both set to work quite zealously and the resulting tapestries are both of a rare splendour. But in her work Arachne lacked respect for the gods and Athene rages. She condemns Arachne to continue to weave forever as ... a spider.

£116.40Torre Bermeja - Isaac Albéniz
Although he was born in Catalonia, Albniz was strongly attracted by the music of Southern Spain, Andalusia and especially Granada. He told his friends this was due to the fact he had 'Moorish blood' in his veins. 'Torre Bermeja' (the vermilion tower) is the last of a set of twelve characteristic pieces and is a passionate and fiery representation of an old Moorish prison tower located in the city of Granada. It was made famous by some guitar arrangements, such as those by Antonio Lozano and Andres Segovia. It is a typical serenade with an 'Andalusian touch' which boasts a splendid tune floating between guitar accompaniment elements.

£214.80Missa Solemnis - Serge Lancen
This Mass has been dedicated to His Holyness Pope John Paul II, to witness Lancens deep and respectful admiration for the Holy Father. The work was composed in 1986 and written for two solo voices: a soprano and a baryton-Martin (high baritone), mixed choir, harp (ad libitum) and symphonic band or organ. It has ten parts: INTROIT - KYRIE - GLORIA - OFFERTORIUM - SANCTUS - PATER NOSTER - AGNUS DEI - COMMUNIO - DEO GRATIAS - and as final part an ALLELUIA. Lancen expressed his views about this Mass as follows: 'The most important aspect of the Mass is the praising of God and the sacrificing to God; that is why I thought it suitable to use both the themes of the Sanctus and the Offertorium in writing the Introtus. It seemed to me also quite logical that the initial themes of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei would be rather similar as these are two moments where the priest and the worshippers invoke God. The composition ends with a brilliant Alleluia in which I also briefly quote the theme of the Sanctus.' This Mass was premiered on 27 may 1989 at 'Our Lady's Church' in Maastricht, The Netherlands, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Roman Catholic Band Federation of the Limburg County. The Bishop Castermans celebrated the Mass, whereas Jan Cober conducted this first performance. The Missa Solemnis is an alternation of meditating, though often impressive, orchestral passages with angelical choral sounds and the pious singing of both soloists. This may not be the type of music we usually expect from Serge Lancen, but nevertheless the composer remains faithful to his own typical style of composition. You can call this work romantic, though it surely is 'contemporary' or, why not, 'from all times'. The instrumentation is varied and extremely rich, mostly due to Lancen's typical use of 'wind band colours'. This Latin Mass suits perfectly well in the tradition of Roman-Catholic Masses that have been written by several great composers.
