Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president, Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene, an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. Inthe poem, Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself, Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. The word nexus is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-knowntheme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressiveballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a hymn in his concerts and Memento is an homage to that proud tradition. Starting with a simple and reverent solo trumpet and introducing other brass instruments one by one, the introduction has the sound of a brass band. The woodwinds join in and, with the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, the work builds to a powerful climax and then resolves once again with the solo trumpet. Ideal for festival use, Memento will give your ensemble an opportunity to explore expression and nuance. The second movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont, Memento was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band.

In cinematic style, this work opens with a panoramic picture of the great Inca city of Machu Picchu and ends with a colorful procession towards the Temple of the Sun. Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The ImmovableDo) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. As One Listens to the Rain is a marriage of two distinct musical ideas. The first, a solitary, solemn melody, is introduced in the trumpet and cloaked in an aura of slowly shifting transparent harmonies. This idea soon gives wayto flowing lines and falling gestures that invoke an image of cascading rainfall. A hymn-like interlude provides a brief respite before the return of the rain which, in this final form, spins and tumbles over itself. A stirringand evocative work for modern winds. Dur: 6:30
