The Masks - Ronald Lo Presti
The Masks was composed in 1955 as a two movement orchestral suite that was part of the American Composers' Edition series produced by Eastman in conjunction with Carl Fischer music publishers. Lo Presti, a student of Howard Hanson is perhaps best known for his Elegy for a Young American written for concert band. Indeed, The Masks is reminiscent of the Elegy in its romantic style with rich contemporary harmonies. There is no programmatic significance to the title, according to Lo Presti, other than the fact that the two movements are in contrasting moods, much like the Greek masks of comedy and drama. Gregory Rudgers transcription is authentic to the orginal piece and gives bandseverywhere a new LoPresti piece of significance.

This arrangement of Randall Thompson's unaccompanied choral piece, The Best of Rooms, was transcribed by Barbara Lambrecht. As a student, Barbara fell in love with Thompson's music after hearing the Texas All State Choir sing his Testament of Freedom. Years later, as a school band director, she joined her church choir and "discovered" The Best of Rooms. Charmed not only by the music but also the text, she arranged this gem for wind band so that a new generation of musicians, in this case instrumentalists, could experience the genius of Randall Thompson. Two wind band versions are available: Version A opens with clarinet choir and oboe solo, while Version B opens with horn quartet. Intuition is a march for the youngest of students that uses only the first six notes of the Bb scale and the most difficult rhythm is two repeated eighth-notes. Even with limited technical demands, you won't believe how much this sounds like a more involved march. It has all of the hallmarks of an American march in form with three strains with different melodic material. The only difference is there is no modulation at the trio. It is a perfect vehicle to introduce this important form to beginning students, and its exceptionally tuneful as well!
