Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan
Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. A cheerful piece full of rhythmic vitality; I wrote this shortly after completing Acentos Oscuras and it is the reverse of the style of that piece. It is fairly simple in form with just three small melodies that are each developed in form plus a central undeveloped, but quite lush, melody that is just repeated three times for the sheer joy of it. The mood of the music is very light and upbeat and is meant to capture that lovely feeling of a sunny, summer afternoon with no work and no worries!Duration: 4.58

About 10 minutes walk from where the composer lives, there is a ford in a river. It is called The Splash and is one of his dog, Simba's, favourite places. No day is complete for him without a swim in the Splash, no matter what the weather is like. It is a lovely spot where the water swirls gently although on occasions when the river is in full spate it can rise quickly and become forceful. This piece reflects that, with its fluid motif running throughout. There is some decorative writing for the woodwind but the pace of the music is moderate and the technical demands are therefore easily manageable.

This composition exudes serenity and tranquillity, but also intensity and expressiveness - giving it similar qualities to earlier works by Van der Roost, like Canterbury Chorale and Adagio for Winds. Long melodic lines characterize the main themes that arise in different registers and develop through varying keys. The band rather sounds like an organ: the varying timbres and broad musical phrases fully justify the comparison with this majestic instrument. There is no bombast, and the work contains no exaggerated technical or rhythmic tours de force. On the contrary, from a lush richness it moves towards a softening final passage that culminates in a slowly fading final chord: following the many warm harmonies and grand melodies, this work concludes in a contemplative mood.
