Literally "The Birds of Brazil", this title refers to the Brazilian people. In Part 1 Passaros coloridos (Coloured Birds) an ocarina or panflute imitates an amazon bird. Part 2 Pomba Triste (Sad Dove) is in a bossa nova style, and tells of the samba girls for whom carnival is not just fun but also a source of income. The legendary comedian Charles Spencer Chaplin is the author of a series of immortal films in which music plays a rather important role. Chaplin, who played the violin and the cello, wrote various musical themes himself, but was also assisted by several orchestrators, among others Alfred Newman, David Raskin and Arthur Johnson. Undoubtedly, 'Charlie' had some original musical ideas, but above all he remained a creator of melodies with simple but fascinating themes. Marcel Peeters brilliantly arranged a number of those tunes for symphonic band. You can hear successively: Limelight Theme - Morning Promenade - This is my Song - Titina - Mandolin Serenade - Green Lantern Rag - Falling Star - Napoli March - Ze Boulevardier. They will no doubt recall the most striking scenes from the masterpieces of this unforgettable artist.

The piece begins with a repeated quaver motif in low brass which is answered by a funky riff in Saxophones. At the end of 1944, Allied troops invaded the Netherlands from Belgium. Hope and longing for freedom, which now seemed so close, swept through the Netherlands: Operation Market Garden was launched. Huge numbers of paratroopers made the dangerous jump to take over enemy territory on the south side of the Rhine. Fierce fighting and attempts to cross and secure the river resulted in heavy casualties for the liberating forces. Ground support from the south came too late and there was no alternative but to call off Operation Market Garden. What looked like a quick liberation of the Netherlands turned into a long, bitter struggle. To make matters worse, a harsh winter followed: hunger and cold ate away at hope and the prospect of a liberated Netherlands. Johan Wichers, who was also known as The March King, was a trumpeter in the band in Nordhorn from 1905. Although he had no formal musical training, he managed to become a famous composer of marches. His march compositions were often based on his personal experiences. He wrote the "Mars der Medici" to thank the doctors who had cared from him during a long recovery in hospital. "Mars der Medici" may even have the right to be called a "hit". On YouTube it has been played hundreds of thousands of times, in its many different versions.

Jacques Offenbachs operetta Voyage to the Moon tells the enchanting story of a prince that sets out on an adventure to travel to the moon. Premiered in Paris in October of 1875, the production was loosely based on the popular Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon and spared no expense in making it a major theatrical event. This lively and exuberant overture contains various themes from the operetta including a beautifully lyric horn solo before concluding with a brilliant cancan-like presto that Offenbach is famous for. The musical flair and dance-like exuberance brilliantly reflect the grand spectacle of the stage presentation.

This arrangement of Randall Thompson's unaccompanied choral piece, The Best of Rooms, was transcribed by Barbara Lambrecht. As a student, Barbara fell in love with Thompson's music after hearing the Texas All State Choir sing his Testament of Freedom. Years later, as a school band director, she joined her church choir and "discovered" The Best of Rooms. Charmed not only by the music but also the text, she arranged this gem for wind band so that a new generation of musicians, in this case instrumentalists, could experience the genius of Randall Thompson. Two wind band versions are available: Version A opens with clarinet choir and oboe solo, while Version B opens with horn quartet. Whether for choir (Catalog No. 2672) or band, the music is lush, warm, lyrical, and mystical. Duration: 4:00

The term Danceries can be found in a copy of Playford's Dancing Master which is an extensive collection of folk and popular tunes of the 17th Century (and no doubt earlier). The melodies themselves are a mixture of new and old(although where the old occurs, it has been adapted in mood and composition and is often interspersed with completely new material). The harmonies and rhythms bring a breath of the new into these themes and add to the drama of theset.
