Legend Of El Muerto - Roland Barrett

Based on a mid-1800s folk tale from "No Man's Land" in Texas, this engaging original composition captures the imagination, depicting sinister livestock rustling and even a little horse thievery. This compelling work uses shifting dynamics, an introduction to aleatoric notation to build the musical intensity, and a chance for one trumpet to depict the stolen horse's whinny. A delightful addition to beginning band literature. (2:15)

The Masks - Ronald Lo Presti

The Masks was composed in 1955 as a two movement orchestral suite that was part of the American Composers' Edition series produced by Eastman in conjunction with Carl Fischer music publishers. Lo Presti, a student of Howard Hanson is perhaps best known for his Elegy for a Young American written for concert band. Indeed, The Masks is reminiscent of the Elegy in its romantic style with rich contemporary harmonies. There is no programmatic significance to the title, according to Lo Presti, other than the fact that the two movements are in contrasting moods, much like the Greek masks of comedy and drama. Gregory Rudgers transcription is authentic to the orginal piece and gives bandseverywhere a new LoPresti piece of significance.

It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

    Captain Blood's Quickstep

A great many marches were composed during the Civil War, and Captain Blood's Quickstep, from the book of 1st Brigade Band, is an example of a tribute to a particular individual. While it's quite possible that Edwin Oscar Kimberley (director of the 1st Brigade Band) was the composer, no name appears on the manuscript and the true authorship of this distinctive march remains a mystery yet today. Regardless the origin, Captain Blood's Quickstep is an effective and entertaining way to capture the flavor of this important period of our nation's history.

Pet Of The Petticoats - John Philip Sousa

When Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band he immediately began to add his own works to the bands repertoire, including Pet of the Petticoats March. This delightful and interesting march is in a different form than that of Sousas later marches, having no introduction, as it begins right with the first strain. Originally written for a stage play of the same name, Pet of the Petticoats March provides a musical window into another era in a simpler, less complex America.

    Sand Sculptures - David Bobrowitz

The beautiful music of J.S. Bachs Prelude No. 1 in C is used in forming this outstanding work for developing bands. The imagery created by the music suggests a day at the sea shore, with the peaceful rise and fall of the surf providing a soothing background. A beautiful setting that introduces the music of a master in an attractive and musical concert setting.

In Endless Song - Robert Lowry

A beautiful hymn composed by Robert Lowry that expresses a true feeling of inner peace and joy. This sensitive arrangement presents the melody with little or no alteration, letting its natural beauty speak for itself. Band composers have long used hymntunes as the basis for their compositions, creating a large and rich repertoire of musical hymn settings. This wonderfully lyric arrangement will make a welcome addition to that collection of works.

    Der Zaubermarsch - Rob Ares

On 30th September 1791, a few months before his death, the opera "Die Zauberflote" (The Magic Flute) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was given its first performance. It was remarkable that despite his ill health and his disastrous financial situation he was able to compose a work of such comic genius. Mozart composed the overture in the two days before the premier of the opera and it is on this overture that this transcription is based. To perform the work 'a la Mozart' only the timpani part should be used, the additional percussion parts have been added by the arranger and are therefore optional.Mozart 40th SymphonyThe Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived atragically short life of thirty-five years. Towards the end of his life in the summer of 1788, he wrote three symphonies in the span of a little over six weeks. His Symphony No.40 in G Minor was one of those great works. This setting of the first movement from that Symphony provides ample demonstration of the composer's grace, inventiveness and pervasive sense of humour, which can be found throughout his music.

The Monk and the Mills - Thomas Doss

Evil people know no songs! Inspiration for this work was taken from the legend of the "Valley of the Mills", in which a traveller taught songs to the people of a village who had been put under a spell by a monk for their violation of moral standards. He brought song and prosperity back to the valley. It is this enchanting story, which shows the positive power of music, that Thomas Doss used as the basis for this splendid concert work which will be loved by all who perform it and listen to it.
