Don Vctor - Ferrer Ferran
Don V ctor, a festive paso doble with a typically Valencian character, evokes the atmosphere of the "Fallas", the Valencian festivals held every March, and of the festivities around the bullfights. This paso doble can be performed as a concert march or a street march. A brilliant trumpet solo gives the piece its Spanish flavour bringing the sound and feel of a hot balmy evening spent at a bullfight.

One can easily imagine in the days of Castes and Kings, how this composition may spark the feeling of what it may have been like for Knights of the Kingdoms to not only protect the Lords of the Castle, but also be chivalrous to the Ladies of the Court. Dancing at the feasts and festivals, escorting the royalty to various events. Knights had much more to do than fight. They were allowed to have fun. Sometimes. Like all of our Grade compositions, its main purpose besides giving good and interesting music for young musicians to play, is that it is an opportunity for the band director to teach some aspect of music. This is a great composition for introducing eighth notes and following dynamics. No clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is A (in the staff). Everyone plays rhythmically together. Only the drum part may vary. All chords of the diatonic scale are used to make the harmony more interesting with no accidentals.

Ever Forward, Ever Onward is a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up. The lines are interesting, too, no matter what instrument you can play. Students will love to play this and I hope you have fun. 1st trumpet's highest note is A.

"Power of the Redstone is dramatic, exciting, and, most of all, it is fun to play! While I have written the piece in g minor, I have thrown in some diminished 7 chords and added some v chords for extraordinary sounds and novelty that students (and teachers who are tired of hearing I-iv-v-I over and over) are sure to latch on to and enjoy. The ranges on all of the instruments are well within the grade level of the piece, with Trumpet 1 going as high as 4th line D (just a couple of times), flute going no higher than their "C" and Trombone hitting their high E-flat one time. Hangin' Ten is one of two movements of a composition called "Barefeet." The works may be played separately or together in a concert. This movement opens with sounds that are a bit mystical, then moving to a Latin jazz/rock style. It is quite syncopated and a fun song for your audience. The ranges are mostly within a Grade 4, though the last note of the Trumpet is C. Rhythmically it is challenging and a bit reminiscent of "West Side Story."

This is the finale from the original soundtrack of the opening ceremony of the XVII Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, 1994. The piece was composed by Knut Reiersrud, Iver Kleive and Marilyn Mazur. The harmonic stress set forth in the opening is soon released with a lyrical trumpet melody, punctuated bass line and a rhythmic woodwind accompaniment. This work is a commission by the Missouri Bandmasters Association to honor the 50th Anniversary of the MMEA. From the opening melody stated by unison flutes, 1st clarinet and 1st trumpet, the work quickly starts through a development of that melody that only this composer does so well. The writing is very "rubato" chorale style often interrupted with short allegro sections but always returning to the opening statement. There is a short flute solo passage as well as a very fluent alto sax solo. A dramatic piece that bands will enjoy playing for years to come.

Strong rhythmic patterns in percussion and woodwinds against a melodic motive boldly stated by the brass open this intense concert work. A calm development section in the middle featuring solos by euphonium and trumpet leads to a full lush statement of the chorale before ending with powerful ensemble writing above driving percussion. A truly masterful setting for the symphonic concert band.
